Is Danny Briere playing his final games with the Flyers?

PHILLY.COM: Sam Carchidi reports Danny Briere could be playing his final home game with the Flyers as they face off tonight against the NY Islanders. Because of his $6.5 million per season cap hit, Briere is expected to be bought out or traded in the off-season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: There’s less speculation about Ilya Bryzgalov being bought out and more about Briere becoming a buyout candidate. The Flyers could trade him, but they could be expected to pick up part of that cap hit. An amnesty buyout seems more likely.

NJ.COM: Rich Chere reports pending UFA blueliner Marek Zidlicky would like to return with the Devils. Neither he or teammate and fellow Czech Patrik Elias have had contract negotiations yet with Devils management. Chere also reports 40-year-old goalie Johan Hedberg, who has one year remaining on his contract, is looking forward to returning next season. Chere doubts the Devils will buy him out.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Devils typically don’t open contract talks with their pending UFAs until season’s end. I daresay they’ll start within the next couple of weeks. I expect they’ll put the priority upon re-signing David Clarkson and Elias over Zidlicky, but given the Devils lack of skilled puck-moving defenseman, they could try to retain him on a short-term, cheaper deal. As for Hedberg, I also don’t believe the Devils will buy him out.

Flyers should buyout the GM. He destroyed this team.

I would like to see Philly buy out Briere and then he goes back to Buffalo to fill a leadership void and mentor our youngsters – he could fill the Hecht or Leino role. Danny has wheels and he is a scorer. To me there was a lack of chemistry or perhaps it was injuries, but Laviolet seemed to keep changing up the lines and so the team just never got rolling. When I look at Philly’s stats, it clearly shows that they need to improve their D – they need to trade for or sign a mature D man who can give them leadership and then focus on developing their youngsters.

Briere returning to Buffalo if bought out would be a huge boost for both player and club. Leino may be able to find the net with Briere.

      • Steve says:

Ice, while the fans in Buffalo were pissed over Briere leaving – their anger was mainly at Darcy. They may have boo’d Briere, but he was a Sabre killer in many ways – not only breaking our hearts, but scoring at will. He knows the area and so do his kids – getting a buyout and helping Buffalo Retool would be a win win all around. Don’t want to get my hopes up…..but, it would be good move.

  3. WHS says:

With his No Movement Clause, I can see Briere forcing a buy out and collecting an additional $833333 bonus for the next 4 years.

  4. Old_Soldier says:

Every year, on the morning of “Free Agent Frenzy” they should have every GM go over the contracts of Luongo, Briere, Bryzgalov, Horcoff, Komisarek and how they have affected the signing team afterwards. Hell even the Rangers are talking about buying out Richards…..already.

Whatever folks think about GM’s policing themselves, I think most people can understand why the league wanted term length and salary variance restrictions. You would think even the players could see the logic of them being able to play more, or extend their careers if their contracts were more reasonable.

  5. Sandy says:

Quite a few teams will have cap issues this off-season.. and will have to buyout or trade players. Teams with cap space could surely benefit.

  6. ROB says:

If the Devils can get Zidlicky on a short team and cheap contract they should keep him. Although i like Hedberg as back-up i really think it’s time the Devils shop around and try to get a quality young goalie who can take over for Brodeur
