Latest on the Jets, Oilers, Leafs and Canucks – July 31, 2012.

A look at free agents who could help the Jet, speculation over the health of the Oilers blueline, plus the latest signings by the Maple Leafs and Canucks.

Jets have not contacted Shane Doan’s agent.

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: Ed Tait lists unrestricted free agents who could help the Jets, including Kristian Huselius, Carlo Colaiacovo, Petr Sykora, and yes, Shane Doan.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The fact the Jets haven’t contacted Doan’s agent says pretty much all we need to know about their interest in him. As for the others, it’s possible the Jets could sign one or two as training camp nears, but their acquisitions earlier this month of Olli Jokinen, Alexei Ponikarovsky and Al Montoya could be it for their UFA signings.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Bruce McCurdy wonders if the Oilers defense corps can avoid the injury bug this season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: As McCurdy points out, the Oilers blueline was walloped by injuries last season. For the Oilers to have a shot at a playoff berth, their defense corps must be healthier.

TORONTO SUN: The Maple Leafs have signed defenseman Mark Fraser to a one-year contract.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: The Canucks signed forward Guillaume Desbiens to a one-year, two-way contract.

  1. Was fraser’s deal a one or two way?

  2. There’s nothing up on CapGeek yet for Fraser’s deal, but his last couple years have been one-way deals, so I’m sure this will follow suit.

    • TSN headline has it as a two way deal. Pretty sure he split time between ECHL and AHL so I doubt the leafs would give him a one way.

  3. Leafs should also sign Mat Gilroy to a deal and stock up on D man …the league is looking for quality d man …they should put Phaneuf and Liles up for trade and get a quality golaie and better forward in two seperate deals …they +would have some really good young defenders coming up as well as Holzer and Franson to anchor….I truly feel by clearing Phaneufs contract and trading him to the right team you can get 2 quality impact players to play in top 6 or at least one top 6 and a 1A aprospect …but if you pkg Phaneuf with a Macrthur or Kulimen and a propect you can really make an impact coming back …Phaneuf was not a high quality defender last year …was terrible on the point on the power play and is slow and terrible infront of the net …no need for him or his contract!
Trade him …clear his money and give it to Shane Doan or make way for an impact player I.e Getzlaf ….

To conclude ….I cant wait until openiong night and hear the fans in game 1 start to chant

He will be gone by the winter classic …the fans as wll as myself have had enough …thanks for going black Burkie …no wants to play for you or the franchise !!! and you know it !!!!

get off the high horse …..great signings this summer …oh yeah ….stupid dumb trade for Ashton for Aulie ..what the F were you thinking ????

  4. Desbiens played for the Canucks minor team year before last and last year underwhelmed to the point where he didn’t make a considerably weaker Flames team. he’ll be given every chance to make the Canucks though as Gillis has once again failed to sign any tough guys or even character players for the 3rd or 4th line aside from the retreads that have already proved they’re not the solution. i have a problem understanding how EVERYONE else saw a need for size and toughness and addressed it except Vancouver especially when the Canucks came within a game of winning the Stanley Cup and their perceived lack of character players to counter Boston’s was identified as a key to moving forward.

  5. I agree with gameon63. but bud we they got alot tougher with the addition of garrisson
