Latest on the Leafs, Flames, Oilers and Canadiens – August 4, 2012.

Three proposed fixes for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Oilers goalie Devan Dubnyk talks about the CBA negotiations, an update on Yannick Weber, and a Flames defenseman heads for the KHL.

ESPN.COM: Doug McIntyre proposes three fixes for the Toronto Maple Leafs: find a number one goalie, find another shutdown defenseman, and find a decent center.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Leafs Nation responds, “Tell us something we didn’t already know!”

Dubnyk remains optimistic over CBA negotiations.

EDMONTON SUN: Oilers goaltender Devan Dubnyk speaks out about the latest CBA negotiations, suggesting there’s no reason to panic over the league’s initial hardline offer, pointing out the lack of hostility between the two sides, and the apparent willingness to get a deal done.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: We’ll know by mid-September if Dubnyk’s optimism is justified. I certainly hope so.

ESPN.COM: Montreal Canadiens defenseman Yannick Weber took to Twitter to deny rumors from the Swiss media he wants out of Montreal. One rumor had the Detroit Red Wings interested in Weber.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: No offense to Weber, but if the Wings are shopping for blueline depth, there are better options to be had.

CALGARY SUN: Flames defenseman Clay Wilson will play next season in the KHL.

  1. Ya you would think the Wings are getting pretty desperate if they are looking at Weber.

I do feel he’ll come into his own somewhere else though.. I don’t like how Montreal has used him thus far.

  2. No surprise that a European media source has misquoted an NHLer. It’s like they’re waiting for that to be named an Olympic sport.

In the meanwhile, I keep hoping Bergevin is not done with the defence and that a move or 2 will be forthcoming before the season starts. Despite my hopes, I have a feeling he is done until he sees what this bunch can do under decent leadership.

  3. @ Casey: I do not think we will see much movement from the Habs until Subban is under contract. he will then know what kind of money he is working with and can better decide who needs to moved and who can be signed. I agree though, at a certain point he is going to reserve jugement to see what they can do under new leadership.

  4. If i was the Canadiens i would explore what they could get for Weber, because they have another 2 spare defenseman anyways that could get playing time and be solid 3rd parings, maybe even better as they progress.

  5. I like the story about Bell and Rogers wanting winning teams in Toronto……don’t you think its about time someone with some pride owned our beloved leafs. Smythe, Ballard were greedy good for nothings, Steve Stavro was a good owner with a conscience and the will to win….Teacher’s Pension Fund, well, what can we say GLAD TO SEE YOU GO.

Finally we have Owner’s here that won’t put up with Burke’s B.S. worring about everything but winning and standing up for what he beleives in. TO BAD IT DOESN’T TRANSLATE TO WINNING

  6. @Hahbsfan1 that, and I’m sure MB is waiting out the Doan situation.. which I really can’t see happening in Montreal (nor do I want it to at the rumoured price/term)

@Landon For sure.. althoug by himself I don’t see him getting much more then a 3rd or 4th round pick.. would need to be part of a package I say.

  7. The Leafs will be controlled by Rogers Communications who has owned and controlled the Blue Jays since 2000.The Blue Jays can best be described as a.500 baseball team who’s payroll is $125 million below that of the Yankees and currently 22nd overall in payroll spent.

In short, while I believe Rogers will insist the Leafs ice a competitive team, I’m not convinced at all that the fortunes of the Maple Leafs will turn around quickly as a result of their takeover from the Pension Plan Group.

Also,do not be surprised if Burke is resigned to a new contract I say this because Burke has rebuilt the farm nicely and acquired draft pics again that were previously lost.

Rogers knows only to well the advantage of a strong farm system to feed the pros and Burke has done it the” Rogers Way”. Just saying.

As for the Leafs themselves and their fortunes, health, luck, sleeper picks, Reimer returns to form, a good trade, a great waiver pickup;maybe even a Luongo trade are things that will all have to go the Leafs way if they hope to make the playoffs in the spring of 2013.

  8. I just posted a comment and it showed and then it disappeared. This was an issue a few months ago wasn’t it?.Is this still a problem on this site? 2 months seems like a long time for a glitch like that to be happening..I don’t know

  9. Sorry..It reappeared again..LOL..spoke too soon :(
