Could the Maple Leafs look outside their organization for a short-term replacement for the suspended David Clarkson? Is there any progress in their contract talks with Cody Franson? Could new ownership for the Florida Panthers spell a contract for Tim Thomas? Which forwards could the Blues move to make room for Brenden Morrow?

NATIONAL POST: Michael Traikos reports Maple Leafs GM Dave Nonis believes his club has enough depth to off-set David Clarkson’s absence during his ten-game suspension. ““Unless something picks up [on the trade market] and there is a better fit, we are comfortable with the way that some guys have played and that we can make it through the 10 games,” Nonis told Traikos yesterday.

There’s also nothing new to report regarding Cody Franson’s stagnant contract talks, but the club would probably like to keep some money available in hopes of reaching a deal. The Leafs currently have less than $1 million in cap space.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Unless Nonis can free up some salary via waivers, demotions or a salary-dumping trade, it appears the Leafs will begin the season without Franson and Clarkson.  UPDATE: Franson has reportedly accepted a one-year, $2 million contract. More to follow shortly.

Panthers to sign Tim Thomas?

Panthers to sign Tim Thomas?

TSN.CA: Darren Dreger reports New York businessman Vincent Viola is expected to be announced Friday as new owner of the Florida Panthers. It’s believed once Viola is officially named Panthers owner, the club will sign goaltender Tim Thomas, who is currently with them on a tryout basis.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: If Thomas is signed (probably to a one-year deal), they’ll either shop or waive current backup Scott Clemmensen, or demote Jacob Markstrom, who is exempt from waivers.

STLTODAY.COM: Jeremy Rutherford reports one of the Blues “regular” checking line forwards could be moved to make room for new Blues winger Brenden Morrow. Lowest-paid forwards Chris Porter and Adam Cracknell are assumed the likely to be moved, but head coach Ken Hitchcock said not to make that assumption, stressing it’ll depend upon how they mold their team.

  1. Replacing Clarkson

No need to go outside the organization !!

I would suggest that the Leafs keep up Josh Leivo to replace Clarkson and then send him back after 9 games …hes looked really good and deserves the shot !!
If not ….Devane should be a shoe in ……or Ashton for sure !

    Tim Thomas
will steal major games for the Panthers closing the playoff gap in that confrence …LEAFS better beware as the 8 spot is up for grabs and be had by any team !!

    Franson signs …
Leafs need to make room ???? Holzer and Colborne or Liles on the outs to make room $$$$ ….Reilly better make this team !

    • Shticky says:

Reilly might play 8 games but I think he goes back to junior.

      • MJR I says:

i think he should be returned. He needs to go back to the Canadian Team World Juniors squad and get some success there. He might have dominated the juniors but I saw nothing special from him last year at that tournament and haven’t seen anything special from him in Toronto thus far.

        • MJR I says:

The game he plays requires a lot of confidence… another year in the juniors and maybe even a year in the minors is what he’ll need to flourish.

      • WOW !!!
Hes quite possibly been there best 2- 3 D man right now …I think he would benefit from Carlyles system at a young age a lot better than going back to Junior and possibly being discouraged and having a bad year that will set him in a different direction of progression ! He should be mentored with NHL guys as that’s his caliber of play …..I think it would be a step back for the organization and the player !

        • The Rielly Ranger combo has been a very good tandem !

Jake Gardiner has not looked good to me this year !!

He rushes the puck into deep and plays with it way too long …he gets caught up ice and causes way too many odd man rushes !

          • Linden 16 Always a Canuck says:

its only preseason… the goons even look better at this time of year

          • Shticky says:

I think he needs a little more time, but I see him making the club easily next year. Id rather it being in the AHL (stupid rule) but baring set backs 1 more year working on his defensive game and to add some strength is all he really needs. He will benefit way more playing 20 plus minutes a night then being a bottom pairing D man or playing 12-15 minutes a night.

    • Kevin says:

If Morgan Rielly is sent down it’s because of his cap hit or because they couldn’t move Liles or Gunnarsson. Now that they have Franson signed they may not be able to provide Rielly with the playing minutes he needs. With Franson signed you also probably say goodbye to Ranger or Fraser unfortunately.

      • Michael says:

my opinion i would let Rielly play his 9 games, give him 2nd pp and play him 16 to 18 minutes a game, if he really impresses we have a gd problem on our hands, Frasor, Gunnarson or Liles would be the three in danger, hard to move Liles (his contract) I love Frasor`s loe=w salary and toughness, I would think Gunnarson would be odd man out.
How about Colbourne and Liles to Calgary Biggs for Stajan and a second. Burke drafted Biggs and i don`t like that pick, He needs alot of work, plus Calgarys second would be between 30 and 35 most likely, Biggs was drafted in the first round, Frees up 925 k for the leafs this year and even more next year. Calgary gets a veteran d man plus Colbourne gets a new start

    • Michael says:

i Don’t think Levio will be sent back to the Juniors, (to old) he will be assigned to the Marlies but i do agree with him filling Clarkson for 10 games, but if it is Ashton or Smith, Levio would be my first call up if a player gets injured. He is going to be a top six forward, watched about 8 games in his final year with Wolves before being traded and he is good. As for making room i know Holzer will be demoted, that is 780k and Smith isn’t going to play the whole season up so the Leafs would only have to pay 10 games out of 82 (until Clarkson gets back. so the majority of his 550k will be in the minors like 475k. So we will be under the cap and have very little wiggle room lol. I didn’t think Franson would sign that low, That is why previously i suggested trading or demoting McClaren. I am so glad Franson took one for the team

      • John Simpson says:

        your still talking about a 21 man roster…..it’s 23…not 21

        • Michael says:

          JVR Kessel Lupul
          Lupul Kadri Raymond
          Colbourne Bolland Kulimen
          McClaren MCclement Orr
either Ashton/levio or Smith after 10 games Clarkson is back and player is sent down unless they impress and we trade Colbourne if Colbourne doesn’t impress

          no paticular order
          Phanuef
          Gunnarson
          Liles
          Franson
          Fraser
          Gardiner
          Ranger

          Riemer
          Bernier
that is a 22 man roster, not 21

          • Michael says:

Also we can keep Rielly up for 9 games and you have your 23 man roster, and play with 13 forwards 8 D and 2 goalies

          • John Simpson says:

            rolls his eyes…

            go to capgeek.com

            it’s all done there….grab a calculator and a piece of paper…

            your calculations are all wrong

          • Michael says:

ok i demoted Holzer and Smith, there is 333,333 left, now how does it work if we call a guy from the minors up, Can someone please explain, i though you gould call someone on a two way contract up and if his NHL salary is 1 million and he plays 10 games it is basically 1/8 of his salary against the cap. So say we called up Ashton for ten games it would be about 125k against our cap, so 333,333 minus 125000 is 208k. If this isn’t how it works please tell me how it does,

          • John Simpson says:

            rolls eyes again….

          • Michael says:

or say we recall Ashton does that make us 700k over? even tho he is only playing ten games

          • Michael says:

Lyle Can you please explain how it works, if a guy on a two way contract is called up for ten games (to replace Clarkson) with the Leafs have to pay lets say Ashtons full salary or only 10 out of the 82 games?

          • Drew says:

didn’t know we had two Lupul’s on our team.

    • ThirstyDeer says:

My guess is Raymond goes up to the second line and Ashton goes to the third line with Bolland and Kulemin.

      • Aki Berg says:

I honestly see either Orr or mclaren moved or demoted at some point. Can’t see the need for both plus mark fraser and clarkson… Especially when they have teams like Detroit who won’t even be dressing one of those type of players.

  2. Shticky says:

Nonis looking pretty shrewd with getting Kadri Franson and Raymond all signed for under 6 mill when some doubted (I was one of em) that he would even get Kadri and Franson done for that amount. Besides Clarksons deal which is way to long imo, seems he did a pretty nice job. Now lets hope all 3 produce similar to what they have showed in the past, and that there is a gm out there who might be interested in Liles.

  3. John Simpson says:

After signing Franson (great Move) Liles is surely being sent down to Marlies. Will he pass waivers on his
way to Marlies? If not then Leafs shed $11,625,000 over the next 3 years. If yes then 950,000 is the cap hit
    for 2013/2014.

If Liles still a Leaf with Marlies
    Leafs Cap Space — $1,004,167
    Liles to Marlies + $2,925,000 (3,875,000 – 950,000)
New Leafs Cap Space + $1,920,833 (23 Man Roster)

If Liles not a Leaf after Waivers
    Leafs Cap Space — $1,004,167
Liles to Another Team + $3,875,000
New Leafs Cap Space + $2,870,833 (23 Man Roster)

It’s a good solution for everyone. It’s unfortunate that Liles is fall guy but he’ll still make money either way.

      • John Simpson says:

        Anyone is the Show hiring?

Pay me the league minimum and I’m there! LOL

        • Id rather see if they can make a deal with Liles and get a pick or depth player some how !

          • John Simpson says:

Everyone has seemed to forgotten this major notation if Liles is traded.

Liles has a Modified Trade Clause in his contract. In his NTC he decides where he wants to go if at all.

Obviously up until now he has refused to be traded.

Regarding waivers if the Leafs decide to put Liles on waivers that is the easiest solution for Liles and for the Leafs. It’s a win win for everyone. (scroll down)

I highly doubt any following team (scroll down) would give any round pick based on Liles salary.

Teams that are able to pick up Liles salary and desperately need a
            defenseman are:

            NY Islanders $15,653,024
Calgary $13,223,333 (Burke traded for him)
            Florida $11,982,125
            Colorado $11,189,167 (Back to Colorado?)
            Ottawa $8,214,167
            Buffalo $6,254,643
            Nashville $4,672,024

Why would anyone feel sorry for Liles.

Liles is making cash and will be playing more minutes with all these available suitors. CHING CHING!

            Comments??

        • As per CapGeek, the Leafs will only get with $79K of the cap by demoting Liles. Another player will have to be moved via trade/waivers/demotion.

  4. Michael says:

Seriously tho would that trade not benifit both teams? Anyone?
Colbourne Liles and Biggs for Stajan and a second? Not going to happen but is interesting lol

    • John Simpson says:

      yawn…

      go to cap geek

you have no clue what you are talking about

      • Michael says:

Liles is 3.875 and Colbourne is 600k, Stajan is 3.5 we would save 925. Care to explain to us that don’t know how it works?

      • Michael says:

yes i know, it is basically a move to get rid of salary we would save 925k this year and he would be a ufa next year and we wouldn’t have to worry about Liles contract for the two years that follow this year, Colbourne is a throw in because he can not clear waivers and for them taking liles and Biggs sweatens the pot (remember burke drafted him in the first round loves those Americans) Leafs get a 2nd for Biggs that can potentially be 30 to 35. Trust me i know Stajan is done Still a depth centerman for 3rd or 4th line, same role Colbourne is playing

        • The Flying V says:

You have to stop using the ‘Burke drafted him’ logic. That was then and this is now. It’s like suggesting the leafs should sign raycroft and trade him to boston for rask because it seemed like a fair trade back then…

  5. Shticky says:

Package Colborne and Liles eat .75 mill or so of Liles salary and someone will give up a 3rd or something. Its not that bad.

    • John Simpson says:

Everyone has seemed to forgotten this major notation if Liles is traded.

      Comments??…….

      • Shticky says:

LeBrun thinks (spoke with another NHL exec.) that Nonis will be getting alot of calls with teams knowing their cap predicament. I am sure there will be away to make some room before the season starts. If not Liles and Colborne (who Im pretty sure missed the last bus in To.) maybe Kuli who I wouldnt want to move but atleast he would get some kind of return.

      • Linden 16 Always a Canuck says:

i thought teams could bury contracts in the minors anymore. If was a one way contract then it counts against the cap

      • Aki Berg says:

Liles has a modified no trade Clause yes but wouldn’t he rather play in the nhl then be waived to the buses??

  6. Michael says:

Could do that, would the Leafs have to pay for 750k next year and year after too. if Not why not just eat 1.375 million for one year and he would go like that. And keep Colbourne, idk i think Colbourne still should be given one last chance. Someone would surely take on Liles for 2.5 million and next year when the cap goes up not a problem

  7. Lyle Richardson says:

John Simpson: Liles can be demoted. His full salary, however, doesn’t come off the Leafs cap as it would’ve under the previous CBA. But he can be demoted. He has a limited no-trade clause so he cannot prevent the Leafs from demoting him.

    • John Simpson says:

If Liles still a Leaf with Marlies
      Leafs Cap Space — $1,004,167
      Liles to Marlies + $2,925,000 (3,875,000 – 950,000)

Liles to Another Team + $3,875,000

Lyle, is this correct? If not please correct?

      Thank you :)

    • Michael says:

so basically he can’t be put on waivers, because then one of the 18 teams he didn’t want to go to can claim him
      yawn…
eyes rolling… lol, i’m just bugging you

  8. Michael says:

i don’t think he can go through waivers, lyle will tell us

  9. John Simpson says:

Hockey At Noon on the air in 10 Minutes….Give em hell KIPPER!!!

    GO KIPPER GO!

  10. Michael says:

I liked The Score when Cam Morency and Steve Kouleas had there talk shows and Cabbie was being Cabbie and Gerry Dee was doing his thing, What happened :( Sportsnets is ruining the Scores image, I do like Tim and Sid Tho, your guys opinion, I know it is off topic

    • John Simpson says:

      Sportsnet bought The Score.

Sportsnet will eventually buy TSN and CBC. Sportnet’s TV Ratings rising each year over the last 5 years. TSN’s TV Ratings decreasing each year over the last 5 years. Hockey Night in Canada rights being sold next year. CBC can’t afford it.

Gabe Morency (drunk on the air and got fired)
Cabral Richards (working for a women’s tv show…what does that tell you about him?)
Gerry Dee (quit to be comedian full time and act)
Tim & Sid (ratings doing badly..didn’t get fired in transition..probably be fired in future)

      • The Ruiner says:

Morency comes across as too abrasive to the general public, Dee knows zero about sports, Cabbie is obviously looking to crossover into mainstream media (ie ET Canada) and Micallef and Seixiero come off as too bush league/Shaw Cable style.

  11. Michael says:

Yes i know Sportnet bought the score, Cabbie didn’t know that lol, but he is still the funniest guy in sports even if he is gay if that is what you are reffering to, knew that about Gabe Morency just saying him and Cam were the best, And sportsnet hockey games are so boring compared to TSN and CBC, I don’t see sportsnet buying TSN. TSN is much better that is my opinion. But where is Cam?
Free Cam Stewart lol, i knew Jerry Dee was a comedian and actor saw him on last comic standing and Gerry Dee, and a couple of movies, just saying Score had a small market that work for the hardcore fans, they are ruining the score (sportsnet 360), it’s like tsn 2 pathetic
    FREE CAM STEWART

    • John Simpson says:

I heard Cam was arrested and Sportsnet decided to fire him.

      • John Simpson says:

not saying details because they are sickening. and disgusting.

        his firing was long overdue

        • Shticky says:

Really???….This is what its come to?? Really? Why dont you guys enlighten us on your favorite color and why

          • The Ruiner says:

Agreed Shticky. The last few days these forums have turned into a Yahoo-style message board. I come on here for hockey rumors and intelligent debates, not people’s bios or resumes. And the name calling needs to end.

  12. Michael says:

fair enough if that is the case, idk so will leave it at that. Would like to know but could be a rumor you never know. But i prefer tsn over sportsnet. One person i can’t stand is the Bob Cat lol Bob Mackenzie is awesome, and i like there fantasy draft and draft preview and stuff, plus there top 10,

  13. John Simpson says:

“Bobcat” has been the highest rated sports broadcaster every year for the last 20 years. He is the best by far.

Bob McKenzie is hated within the sports media. The only reason he was hired is his dad got it for him. He has now hired his son. The nepotism is pathetic.

You seriously need to grow up or start to see things more clearly. Liking Cam, Gabe Morency, Cabral and McKenzie is not a good thing. Very pathetic.

Give your head a shake, GROW UP and OPEN YOUR EYES.

    • Michael says:

i have my opinion you have yours, i don’t like “bobcat” and Mackenzie is awesome. Cabbie is awesome and shows that people in sports live outside the game. Cabbie is more respected by athletes then any other guy, There is nothing wrong with liking Cabbie Mackenzie and Cam, I liked the show with cam and Gabe, Gabe i could care less for tho. Just because we have a different opinion doesn’t mean i have to grow up lol

  14. Michael says:

don’t believe everything you hear, not saying your wrong only time will tell. I seen him a couple of times on sportsnet doing segments interviewing fans wasn’t him tho, he did better doing what he does, score on the NFL live at the score ect.

  15. Michael says:

just because bobcat has most ratings doesn’t make him the best.If that was the case Toronto would win the cup every year. I don’t have to like the most popular guy in bradcasting, TSN is much better then Sportsnet in my opinion and the Sportsnet is ruining the score (SN360)

  16. We can debate the Cap structure all we want and look for loop holes all day !!!

In the end to make it work and fill the roster and make sure you have the best players on the roster moving forward both Kulimen and Liles will have to go ….starting with cuts and releases Colborne and Holzer being sent down and on waivers. Becuase of this its hard for the Leafs to make a trade becuase the teams are doing final cuts and there will be a ton of guys on waivers in the next few days which means teams will not be deleting guys from rosters via trades if they can keep players and just add for nothing !!

Nonis will have to be creative and try and find a way get rid of money….as per the John Simpson plan IF IT WORKS ????

    • The Stepan deal is a perfect deal for Derek $3
mill a year for 2 years …allows him to cash in with a new contract and take his game elsewhere at that time if he so chooses as I dont see him hitting the $5million mark with the Rangers the way they are structured right now for the future !

They have 60% of a team to sign next year !!!

  17. Aki Berg says:

So everyone is worrying about the leafs cap situation but what about the red wings? They don’t have any LTIR to my knowledge and Tatar is playing good can’t see demoting him…

    • Actually, Aki Berg, go back a day or two through my rumor section, you’ll find a report where it states injuries could help the Red Wings become cap compliant to start the season. Gustavsson, Tootoo, Eaves and Helm all sidelined, most or all could end up on LTIR.
