The NY Rangers continue to seek a defenseman…the latest on Sean Avery…Zach Parise talks once again about his future…Anton Stralman not on the Devils roster.

NEW YORK POST: Larry Brooks reported the Rangers have re-opened talks with former Ranger defenseman Paul Mara as they continue to seek additional depth in case Marc Staal, who’s suffering from post-concussion symptoms, remains sidelined longer than expected. There’s no timetable for Staal’s return, but GM Glen Sather hinted it could be long-term.

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS/NEW YORK POST: reported on the status of forward Sean Avery, who cleared waivers and returned home from Europe yesterday. Avery’s agent said the winger has received interest from several European teams, but he’s willing to play wherever the Rangers want him. GM Glen Sather suggested it was possible Avery could play his way back onto the Rangers lineup if he should agree to report to their AHL team.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Do the Rangers really want Avery with their AHL team? Sure, he’s handled the current situation well, but how long can he hold his tongue if he’s riding the buses in the minors?  I still think he’ll end up loaned to a European team, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

Staying put in New Jersey?

NEW YORK POST: Mark Everson asked Devils forward Zach Parise if being named the club’s captain encouraged him to remain with the club. ”Yes,” he said. “I don’t know how many times I have to say it. I like it here, and I want to stay here.”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: A lot of folks look at the one-year contract he signed with the Devils as proof he’ll depart next summer via free agency, but that was mutually agreed upon by both sides to allow more time to work out a longer-term deal. I’ll be very surprised if Parise isn’t re-signed before next summer, and I certainly don’t expect him to be traded this season, regardless of where the Devils finish in the standings.

NJ.COM: Rich Chere reports the Devils submitted their 23-man roster but defenseman Anton Stralman wasn’t on it. Stralman attended the Devils training camp on a tryout basis, and could be allowed to stay around a few day while unsigned. GM Lou Lamoriello claimed he’s still talking with Stralman’s agent but no decision has yet been made.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Devils have around $4.6 million in available cap space so money probably isn’t the issue here.

I heard somewhere Lou doesn’t negotiate during the season, is this true?
Either way, I tend to believe Parise will be a UFA next year. Reports are that NJ is on the verge of being bankrupt, and probably won’t be able to afford Zach beyond this year. I could see NJ starting a slight rebuild if they don’t make the playoffs again, starting with Broduer’s replacement. But a strong performance from the team this year could make things very interesting.

RE: Stralman – Although the Devils have lot’s of cap space, I disagree that money is not the issue. The Devils spent way over the cap last year when you look at players on IR (Rolston, Salvador, Parise) and with the team still in debt (their ownership issues were settled by Ray Chambers _paying_ $25m to get out) ownership has to be looking at the bottom line. The Devils have waived 2 players with one-way contracts (Fraser, Pelley), but are still keeping them with the team for the time being. If money was not the issue, they would simply send Fraser to Albany making NHL dollars and sign Stralman to fill his spot.

NJ did fairly well the second half of last season…with Parise back this year and a decent showing from Broduer they’ll compete for the last 2 playoff spots…NJ would be foolish to wait till next summer to neogiate a deal for Parise.

I know Detroit wants Parise, but landing him would be the answer to Buffalo’s dreams.

  5. Alex says:

@Robert – I think nearly (if not every) team in the league would like Parise skating for them.

I must admit I too was in the “Parise will be playing for another team by or before next summer” boat. While players will often give the standard PC answer showing respect towards the team and city they play in even if/while they are working a move behind the scenes, in this case the repeated statements from ZP have me doing a 180 and firmly believing he will in fact be staying in NJ. Regardless of any pending salary limitations of the team, ZP is certainly a player they will make every effort to secure for the long term.

I called quite sometime ago that Parise was going to get the ‘C’ and I think that cements him on the team. Parise is the best player on the Devils and I think they will lock him up long term and choose to move other assets instead. I feel sorry for them because of the Kovalchuk signing and I really hope that the new CBA limits those kind of contract lengths. But Parise stays a Devil!

  7. Dino Rondelly says:

    @JJB

I dont know how you can feel sorry for the Devils with the Kovy contract the NHL gave them an out they just kept trying …. I think i good lesson here would be to see them lose ZP because of that contract.

The Rangers need Avery around the team or the AHL as much as we need world war 3. By doing what he his doing,Glen Sather,is telling Avery, like he did with Theo Fleury,go clean up your act.

Ballard to New York for cap space.

As much as I would love zp on my team, you have to think that the devils will pay him big if he clicks with kovalchuk this year.
Take the lesser of two evils
Kovy tears it up, scoring 40-50 goals this year, zp adds 25g 60a and is the best linemate that kovy ever has. Uncle Lou realizes that batman and robin need to stay together and pays top dollar to keep zp. 19 million a year for two guys is alot, but Lou has no choice.
    Or
Kovy and zp don’t click, have down years, and jersey is stuck with the albatross of a contract that IK

(btw for all you golf fans out there, an albatross is one shot better than an eagle, and can only be scored on a par 5, because nailing a par 4 in one is still considered a hole in one. It’s going to be 25 degrees on saturday, so one last round before the sticks are put away)

    Buff, check your email.

  13. Mats says:

GM of Färjestad in the Swedish league said he had been offered Avery and declined. The team is dead last with 2 W and 7 L games so far…cant be easy finding a home for him. :)

“A lot of folks look at the one-year contract he signed with the Devils as proof he’ll depart next summer via free agency, ..”

None, besides deluded Laff-tards and Hab-tards who are POSITIVE Parise wants to play for them, think that Parise doesn’t re-up with the Devils.
