The Red Wings could find slim pickings in this summer’s free agent market, updates on Chris Osgood and Drew Miller, and a trade suggestion.

DETROIT NEWS: Ted Kulfan reports not to expect the Red Wings to be big shoppers in this summer’s free agent market as there isn’t much to go shopping for, plus they have to watch their available cap space this summer. Should the salary cap increase as expected to $62 million, that’ll leave approximately $16 million to fill eight spots, which include spots for Nicklas Lidstrom, Jonathan Ericsson, Drew Miller and Patrick Eaves, whom GM Ken Holland hopes to retain. Kulfan also reported earlier in the week veteran Wings goalie Chris Osgood faces a difficult decision on whether or not he’ll retire or seek to return for another season.

DETROIT FREE PRESS: Helene St. James reported Miller is hoping to re-sign with the Red Wings, but it’ll come down to price in terms of his salary and the Wings available cap space.

SPORTING NEWS: Craig Custance suggested the Wings shop winger Jiri Hudler to clear his $2.875 million off their books for next season, giving Holland more space to add a free agent at a reasonable price.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I expect Lidstrom will return for another season, plus Miller and Eaves should also return, though I’m not as certain about Ericsson’s future with the club, though he should be an affordable re-signing if they wish to bring him back. I think Osgood will have no choice but to retire, while Hudler will likely become trade bait this summer.

trade hudler no matter what and pick up bieksa he’s been a beast. maybe pick up bogosian!

i had a weird thought at the deadline trade for alfredsson? i know he’s a million but he’s sweedish fits in the wings locker room and will be hungry in the playoffs for a cup before retiring. Have him for this 1 year while we still have a huge veteran presence before we start the youth movement

  2. DurtMCHurt says:

Don’t hold your breathe on Bieska or Bogosian. Bieska isn’t going anywhere and Bogosian will cost a kings ransom in which the Wings have had a long history of not paying. I also expect not much to happen this summer. Maybe a depth veteran FA or two but no major trade I’m affraid.

  3. Jefferson says:

Bieksa is staying in Vancouver, he’s proven in the playoffs that he’s more valuable (and durable) than Christian Ehrhoff – whom I expect the Wings will have zero interest in…. I think Atlanta(Winnipeg?) should be patient with Bogosian. Alfredsson to the Wings at next year’s trade deadline is an interesting possibility, but a lot of things have to go right (or wrong, in the case of the Senators) in order for that to happen, plus I believe Alfie has a NTC and he would have to approve the trade.

  4. Buffbry says:

i’m sure he would approve the trade in his last season going to a sweedish dominated team for a chance to win a cup

i’d love to see the alfredsson move.
a thought on Ehrhoff, last 2 years considered,
the top 10 offensive D in the league:
Lidstrom, Letang, Yandle, Corvo, Vishnovsky, Weber, Boyle, Keith, Doughty……and Ehrhoff.
(assuming the jury is still out on excellent rookies: Fowler, Pietrangelo, Subban, Carlsson)
I’m counting D that are still excellent at D, hence no M.A. Bergeron or Mike Green.
I’ve left lots of room to quibble, but when is this guy gonna get more recognition?
a thought on detroit signing Kaberle, how bout Carolina? Seems like the perfect fit.

  6. Liddy5 says:

Ehrhoff and Kaberle will cost too much for what they bring to the table, I think. Bieksa has been a beast in this year’s playoffs, but don’t forget it was only a year ago that Nucks fans were calling for him to be traded. Buyer beware.
