Lightning Fire Head Coach Guy Boucher.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have announced the dismissal of Guy Boucher as their head coach. His successor has yet to be named. Assistant coaches Martin Redmond and Dan Lacroix will coach the team for Sunday’s game against the Winnipeg Jets.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Boucher becomes the second coach to lose his job this season, and one has to believe the Lightning will soon announce his replacement. Could it be former Sabres coach Lindy Ruff, who was fired earlier this season?  It’ll be interesting to see who gets the job.

As for Boucher, he had tremendous success in his first season behind the Lightning bench, coaching them to the 2011 Eastern Conference Final, but last season it appeared  teams had figured out his defensive system, and after a quick start to this season the club’s been in free-fall in the standings. Part of the reason is injuries to key players, while young Anders Lindback has yet to blossom into a quality starting goalie. Still, something had to be done, and since you can’t fire the players, the coach is usually the one to take the fall.

  1. Jacques Martin, Brent Sutter a few notables available… but might end up being Ruff.

  2. Injuries to key players? Yeah.. the Sens have that as well…a total of 5 key injuries, Anderson, Spezza, Michalek, Karlsson & Cowe — they seem to be winning some games. Reason: A very good coaching staff, good leadership, and players that buy into the team concept.

Tampa has some very good players… they just need an experienced coach… Ruff would be a good fit.

  3. I really liked Boucher’s coaching – I think there area few problems with TB – injuries, aging players and a good portion of salary committed to those aging players – $33M. I would rather see Lindy go coach in Columbus, but the Jackets have really come on this past month and I don’t see them changing captains with such a good run and especially if they make the playoffs. Toronto – know they would love to have Lindy – but I think them changing coaches will depend on if they get into the playoffs or not – lately they have been somewhat floundering. I’ve also heard rome talk about Lindy going to San Jose – now I am not a McLellan fan, never have been and I think he was given a SC team and just couldn’t get them to the finish line. Makes me wonder why Robinson was brought in, maybe to transition to head coaching duties? Actually, I think the Sharks would be a good fit for Lindy. Anyway, I think there will be a lot of coaching movement at the end of the season andno matter what – I wish Lindy the best.
