Why ESPN doesn’t cover the NHL, Karl Alzner’s home surprise following Game Three, the pain of playoff hockey, the NHL week in review, trade speculation on Crosby, Malkin and Staal, the latest on the Islanders arena issue, and the weekend schedule for the World Hockey Championships.

An unwelcome surprise awaited Alzner at home following Game 3.

PUCK DADDY: Greg Wyshynski looks at why ESPN doesn’t cover the NHL very much anymore (though they still do a great job with their online coverage), while Harrison Mooney reveals the surprise awaiting Washington Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner when he returned home from playing that triple OT marathon in Game Three against the Rangers. Perfect end to a long day!

BACKHAND SHELF: Ellen Etchingham on the pain involved in playoff hockey and why we fans love it so. At some point in marathon OT games, hockey is no longer a game, becoming instead a painful endurance contest. Very little skill is seen by the second overtime, and once you hit the third one, it’s usually a lucky break, not skill, which determines the outcome.

GRANTLAND.COM: Katie Baker checks in with her weekly review of the NHL, including the many stages of overtime hockey.

THE HOCKEY WRITERS: Justin Glock examines the recent spate of trade rumors involving the Penguins top forwards of Crosby, Malkin and Staal, and believes the Penguins are better off retaining them. I think Penguins management feels the same way. Cap space, however, will be the determining factor.

CBS NEW YORK: B.D. Gallof believes Barclays Center in Brooklyn is becoming a more viable option for NY Islanders ownership. If it were possible to get the Lighthouse Project underway, even the scaled down version, it would’ve been approved by now. The Islanders won’t be on Long Island beyond 2015, but they won’t be moving far. Sure, Barclays Center is small by hockey standards, but if the Winnipeg Jets can make a go of it with their smaller-than-average venue, so can the Isles.

HOCKEY WILDERNESS: presents the schedule for May 4 and 5 of the World Hockey Championships.
