Did Habs ownership get involved in P.K. Subban's contract talks?

Did Habs ownership get involved in P.K. Subban’s contract talks?

MONTREAL GAZETTE:  Jack Todd reports a highly-placed source said Canadiens owner Geoff Molson got involved in contract talks with defenseman P.K. Subban. It was Molson’s call for Subban receiving an eight-year, $72 million contract.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: If Molson did get involved it was probably because he didn’t want to run the risk of losing his superstar in two years time to unrestricted free agency. Subban is the Canadiens most popular star. Losing him wouldn’t sit well with Habs supporters.

THE VANCOUVER SUN: The Canucks have hired longtime NHL assistant coach Perry Pearn. He’ll follow the Canucks games from the press box as well as work on their power play.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Edmonton Sun and NHL.com journalist Derek Van Diest is no fan of the Oilers hiring hockey analytics blogger Tyler Dellow. Jonathan Willis offers up a rebuttal.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: My take on the Dellow hiring can be found here

TORONTO STAR: The Maple Leafs will hand out Stanley Cup rings to their 1960s champions.

  1. I don’t know what to think about this Dellow Fellow. I know Nikitin would NOT be an Oiler is Dellow was hired earlier. I’m not sold on the advanced stats thing. I think anyone can sit there and crunch numbers. It’s not a big time skill. Just because a players advanced stats looked not great 3 years ago don’t mean they will be bad in 2014-2015. I have a calculator and internet access, does that mean I can get a job with an NHL team adding and subtracting?

    • Its not just numbers….hours of watching video and breaking down situations just to get the numbers to “crunch”, then comparing them to other guys and different situations. I think that is one of the biggest misconceptions of these guys like Dillow, assuming they dont watch the game, the best guys in this line of work watch more games and more footage than even diehard fans, but its done with purpose and perspective. The numbers are the easy part….how they get those numbers is the work. Alot of Dillows ditractors point to his personality and attitide because they cant really dispute or poke holes in his work.
