NHL Canadian Corner – February 16, 2012.

Senators get big win over Panthers…Jets need their best players to be at their best…Canadiens fall to Bruins in shoot-out…Canucks grind out win against Avalanche…Leafs snap losing streak with win over Oilers…Roman Horak getting his chance with Flames.

OTTAWA SUN: The Senators downed the Florida Panthers 6-2. Daniel Alfredsson also scored his 20th goal of the season, the 13th time in his career he’s reached that mark.

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: Jets captain Andrew Ladd called for his team’s best players to be at their best if they’re to make the playoffs.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I don’t think that’s going to be enough to improve their offensive depth, which the Jets have been lacking this season.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: Max Pacioretty is not pleased with his performance in shootouts this season. The Canadiens fell to the Bruins 4-3 in a shootout on Wednesday.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The whole team shouldn’t be pleased with their performance in shootouts this season, as they’re among the worst teams in the league in that category.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: The Canucks had to grind out a 3-1 win over an injury-depleted Colorado Avalanche team last night.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Canucks are 8-0-2 in their last ten games and sit only two points out of first overall in the Western Conference, but if you went by the local media, you’d swear this team was on the verge of missing the playoffs.  Seems like they’ve been extra-critical of the Canucks since their meltdown in the final two games of last year’s Stanley Cup Final.

TORONTO SUN/EDMONTON JOURNAL: The Maple Leafs snapped a four-game losing skid, edging the Oilers in overtime 4-3.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Maple Leafs needed that win to put a little breathing room between themselves and the ninth overall Washington Capitals.

CALGARY SUN: Injuries to key veterans is allowing youngsters like Roman Horak a chance to prove themselves with the Flames.

  3. Ak to Winnipeg for Oduya… will throw in Weber or Campoli for a pick.

  4. Even though the Canucks have gone 8-0-2 in the last 10 games a number of those wins came in OT and shoot outs and a few of those came to OT and shoot outs after the Canucks had led after 2 periods and In fact had led with less than 3 minutes to go. Vancouver has a bad habit of going to what I call “Panic Defense” when they have the lead with a few minutes left to play. Instead of continuing to play the same game that got them the lead in the first place they just work on throwing the puck out of the zone and waiting for the other team to regroup and then just try to throw the puck out again.
Also, while I am a critical mood I would like to ask a question and that is…why when the Sedin’s and their linemate are cycling the puck with great skill can’t they every once in a while have someone (anyone) go to the front of the net?

  5. I guess a point is better than nothing against the defending champs. Kinda pissed off that Marchand low bridged our best hitter Emelin last night though. He should watch some of Emelins hits to see how you hit like a man and not like a weasel dirt bag.

    Flame Defence Force activate!

  6. I think that sooner rather than later The little ball of Crap will get what he has coming to him! This guy continues to show contempt for all players. They complain about Subban and yes he has slew footed player and i am not sure if it is intentional or a reactionary thing, but he certainly does not do that crap!
I wonder why the Bruins players in viewing some of the things they have done seemly get away with less punishment than other teams. I love how Thorton can blindsides Emelin and not get a penalty. I also see that there were missed calls the other night even again the bruins. I the ref’s this year across the league have been questionable on more nights than not!
Costing teams points is not cool, I want to know How on earth Chris lee is still allowed to ref after some of the bad games he has reffed this year. He directly has cost teams points by lopsided calls again particular teams.
