NHL Canadian Corner – February 2, 2013.

Recaps of Friday’s games between the Senators-Hurricanes, Jets-Lightning and Blackhawks-Canucks, and the latest on Taylor Hall, Mikka Kiprusoff, Max Pacioretty and more.

Roberto Luongo was stellar in Canucks win over Blackhawks.

Roberto Luongo was stellar in Canucks win over Blackhawks.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE/CHICAGO TRIBUNE: Roberto Luongo won his second straight game, kicking aside 27 shots in regulation and OT to carry the Vancouver Canucks to a 2-1 shootout win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Jordan Schroeder scored the game-winner for the Canucks.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: That will add more fuel to the media-driven “goaltending controversy” in Vancouver, as well as bolster Luongo’s trade value. In the meantime, his steady play in three straight games has resulted in five points (2-0-1).

NEWSOBSERVER.COM/OTTAWA CITIZEN: Eric Staal scored the game’s only goal and Dan Ellis made 33 saves as the Carolina Hurricanes blanked the Ottawa Senators 1-0. Craig Anderson made 34 saves in a losing cause for the Senators.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Anderson is the Senators MVP so far this season. He’s been the league’s best goaltender as well.

TAMPA BAY TIMES/WINNIPEG SUN: The Tampa Bay Lightning crushed the Winnipeg Jets 8-3. The Bolts had a six-goal lead by the end of the second period, led by rookie star Cory Conacher (2 G, 1A) and Steven Stamkos (1G, 2 A).  Tobias Enstrom, Andrew Ladd and Paul Postma replied for the Jets, who’ve now lost three straight.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Jets found out the hard way why the Lightning are currently the NHL’s highest scoring team, averaging nearly five goals per game.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Oilers winger Taylor Hall is off to a hot start to this season, with points in all of his club’s games to date.

CALGARY SUN: Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff is struggling to round into form.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: That’s not unexpected, as Kiprusoff has a reputation as a slow starter. Over the course of an 82-game schedule, that’s not a problem, but it could prove more serious over a shortened season.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: Canadiens winger Max Pacioretty could return from his appendectomy much earlier than expected.

TORONTO STAR: The Maple Leafs hope for a better record against the Boston Bruins this season. Last season, the Bruins owned the Leafs, winning all six of their match-ups, two by lopsided scored.

  1. Canucks
They can not make ANY goaltending moves until the trade dead line or off season !
I figured that if Luongo came out ahead in this that it would be a rallying cry for the team to play for Luongo this year and it has …if fate plays a role here …and the Canucks bring in another piece without moving a goalie they could be hard team to beat and make there way deep in the playoffs this year if they have continued success…Luongo might just as well be a Vezina candidate if he keeps this up as well!!

He looks stellar right now in the net in every facet of his game!!

    LEAFS
Gold rush fever here for sure…. …leafs should get blown out by Boston tonight …..almost afraid to watch the game tonight!! They will not be able to contain the relentless offence and are not aggressive enough to battle deep in Bostons end ..this could be ugly!!
On that note: it would be very cool if Kessel could get off the schnide against Boston …even if its the only goal they score tonight which I have a feeling it might be !!

    Tampa Bay

at the beginning of the year is my dark horse team for the cup ….if Dallas or Aanahiem are no where near a playoff spot by trade deadline …Tampa should look hard at getting Jagr or Selanne for a cup push …Just to throw this out there ….if Luongo gets traded would Tampa be a fit could they make it work????

    Calgary ..

the writing has been on the wall for the past 2 – 3 years now ….give it up and start over !!!
Kipper is not a one man show anymore …hes the only reason the Flames have even come close to the 8th spot without him they are in the bottom 3 each year!!

    Oilers

even with all that talent ..there still seems to be something missing ????
Hemsky has been better than great …and the rookie Hartkinainen is a pure star in the making ….if I was a GM he would be my starting point for any trade with the Oilers ……hes a diamond in the ruff this guy!!
Heres another team that may have interest in Jagr at the deadline as they were in on him at the start of the year as well !

    JETS

Hi Mr Cheveldayoff …..good morning sir…. it’s Dave Nonis here , how are you? ….I am just inquiring to see if you might be interested in Phil Kessel, Jake Gardiner and Tyler Biggs a second rounder for Zach Bogosian and Eveander Kane …looking to make a deal ….Please get back to me asap!! Thank you !!

    • BC – look I’m not sure where we would put Jagr or Selanne except at the end of the bench

      #1 – 12G 31pts
      2 – 11G 32pts
      3 6G 12pts – Tyrell has only played 2 games 1g-2
      even brewer has 3G

maybe pick up some 4th line time? so I think were good – k

If the Van came down maybe they could put both goalies in net – might work

seriously Salo has been a BIG key though, but no press – PP = 40%

  2. Canucks – Could still move Luongo if they get their asking price but I don’t see that happening. Luongo’s ability was never the real issue here so his good play of late doesn’t affect any decision to move or aquire him either way, it’s his stupid contract that is the determining factor and that contract hasn’t changed.

Leafs – The way they have been playing this year means they should get blown out of the water tonight but stranger things have happened and if they get lucky with an early goal then maybe they don’t get crushed tonight. Either way they will loose it’s just a matter of, by how much.

Calgary – should have rebuilt 2 years ago. I feel sorry for their fans

Oilers – need a new coach, someone with experience to take them to the next level. See if Scotty Bowman wants the challange one more time. It’s almost a guarantee that Bowman will win a cup within two years with this stacked roster and him at the helm.

  3. @Backchecking
As a Leaf fan, I do that deal with the Jets you proposed but I doubt the Jets would do it IMO.

    • As a leafs fan I’m happy they would never made such a dumb deal like that.

  4. @ Beer goggles …take a look at this kid …surprised that the Fletcher connection hasn’t brought a Wild & Leafs trade considering that the Wild have depth in youth ..and Leafs are looking !!

This prospect would or could be a great future # 1 center man on the Leafs !!

A Kadri – Coyle – Frattin line could be dominant in a year or two!

Even if thats your second line like a Malkin Neal line you would be in good shape ..this way your talented second line isn’t playing against the top # 1 line all the time ..great depth scoring

    http://www.hockeysfuture.com/prospects/charlie_coyle/

    • I’d be worried about putting Kadri back on the wing. He’s a natural center and has played 10 times better as a center so getting another center could push Kadri back to a 4th line center position with Grabo taking the number 2 position and this kid potentially taking the number 3 position.

We need a number one center, we have an abundance of number two, three and forth line centers. You know I agree with dangling Kessel to get one. If trading Kessel gets us a number one tough center between Lupul and JVR you have a fantastic top line. Kadri, Frattin and who ever make a good 3rd line. If we can pick up another JVR type guy for the Grabo, Kulemin line we would be all set up front. The back end is another story.

I a little worried Frattin will be injury prone due to his smaller size and the aggressive style he plays.

  5. BTW I love watching Zach Bogosian skate. This kid could be a star

  6. Beer goggles

Speaking of back end… …where is all this offensive power that they were looking at getting with John Michael Liles ..4 assists on the year so far …was suppose to be a prominent puck mover ….and power play specialist! Power play sucks !!! another $4 .5 million for 3 years…. ??
    Invisible!
I would rather they picked up Sheldon Souray for the million less and improved the defensive game all around veteran presence in the room and on the Ice and powerful accurate shot on the PP …missed the boat again !!
If only Dion could hit the fricken net !!
It would nice to see Hamilton on the team a little longer and on a third line with more minutes I think he could help more if given the chance!

Wander if you offered Gardiner and something if you could get Oliver Ekman Larson out of Pheonix???

  7. @Eggsuckindog

Selanne was the leading scorer on the Ducks last year and he is this year as well…..hes a second line guy on any team when your going for the CUP sit someone else at the end of the bench for 6 weeks if you want to win a cup!! Same thing with Jagr !!
    Are you kidding me ????

    @ Ron Moore -

No offence but a couple of days ago you asked who Ryan Hamilton is ??? If you follow the Leafs you would know hes the Marlies captain for years now and he was the AHL MVP and had a hat trick in the All Star game ???
Not sure why you wouldn’t want to Trade Kessel and Gardiner with pieces for Kane & Bogosian …Kane is a power forward winger who scored 29 goals last year and plays a better complete game than Kessel who you may not even sign again after this year so that’s reason # 1 …Gardiner is a free wheeling rushing defensman hes not going to play the body and score goals and check like Bogosian would Gardiner is soft and may not be a Carlyle type guy as he wasn’t in Anaheim….thats reason # 2 …….not sure what you think is so crazy about that …If I told you Philly was going to trade Richards and Carter youd say thats nuts no way …well….that happened !!! Leafs need size and more power in the line up you have to know that !! These two guys can address that instantly with trades for what you would get back !!
