NHL Canadian Corner – February 24, 2012.

Canucks snap Red Wings 23-game home win streak…Craig Anderson cuts hand, out indefinitely…Flames GM unhappy over team’s recent loss…Jets move into tie for first in Southeast Division…Leafs fading fast…Devan Dubnyk backstops Oilers to shutout over Flyers…Canadiens woeful home record.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: Alex Burrows scored the winner in a shootout as the Canucks downed the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 to snap the latter’s 23-game home winning streak.

Anderson cuts hand, out indefinitely.

OTTAWA CITIZEN: Senators goalie Craig Anderson cut his right hand while preparing a meal, and is out indefinitely.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Citizen reports Anderson could be out up to two weeks, while the Ottawa Sun reported up to eight weeks. Either way, this could be prospect Robin Lehner’s time to shine. He, or Alex Auld, had better shine, because if Anderson’s out beyond two weeks, it could prove a real blow to the Senators’ playoff hopes.

CALGARY HERALD: Flames GM Jay Feaster wasn’t pleased with his club’s shootout loss to the Coyotes, hinting at roster changes if things didn’t improve by Monday.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I’ll have more on this later today in my Rumors section, but the consensus amongst the Calgary media is Feaster is uttering empty threats.

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: The Jets 4-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning has put them into a tie with Florida for first in the Southeast Division and a three way tie with the Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs for the final playoff spot in the Conference.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: That could be temporary as the Leafs and Panthers have games in hand, but there’s no denying the Jets have played their way of late back into the playoff picture.

TORONTO SUN: The Maple Leafs continue to struggle, falling 2-1 to the San Jose Sharks.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Leafs have lost seven of their last eight games (1-6-1), and are in danger of falling completely out of the playoff picture if they don’t improve soon.

EDMONTON SUN: Devan Dubnyk made 35 saves as the Oilers blanked the Philadelphia Flyers 2-0.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: The Canadiens have the worst home record in the Eastern Conference.

  1. Leafs Leafs Leafs….no point in trying to aquire a netminder now. They don’t have enough steam and skill even if they made the playoffs to go deep. And I don’t wanna see a trade for a band-aid goalie. There are UFA’s available in the summer. Just need to try and enjoy the rest of the season, as usual. Maybe with a little luck, Wilson ,Allaire and the excess baggage on the ice will be elsewhere next season. 20 games to go, at this rate, I say 8 of them are wins. Not enough to make the post-season with what we have right now, but trade deadline day is on Monday, so we’ll see….

  2. If the Sun is correct and Anderson is projected to be sidelined for up to 8 weeks it will be interesting to see if G.M. Murray is also in the hunt for a goaltender before Monday.

  3. @Tux

Are you warming up to my name yet? The Leaf issues aren’t just about goaltending if you look at the bigger picture. Wilson’s gotta go….

  4. On the bight side, if the teams who need to be big winners for the rest of hte season (Ducks, Jets, Leafs) to get it actually make it… that momentum can mean a lot.

  5. I hope Murray stands pat and does NOT seek a goaltender. As has been stated before the Sens making the playoffs is just a plus this season and Anderson/Lehner are going to be a great tandem in Ottawa. If the Sens want to make a move, keep it a depth move, get some more character or scoring depth, maybe seek a cheap depth defenseman. Let Auld/Lehner bare the load and help them by getting some more defensive minded people into the depth end of the system.

As for the Leafs, they just don’t have what it takes because they don’t have the center. You need a top center, look at every team who wins the cup and who is playing center ice for them in the past 6-10 years.

    Bruins – Bergeron, Krejci
    Chicago – Toews
    Penguins – Crosby, Malkin, Staal
    Wings – Zetterberg
    Ducks – Getzlaf
    Hurricanes – Staal

Follow that up with TB, NJ, DET, COL, NJ, DAL, DET, DET, COL, NJ … I mean all of these guys are rocking top flight centers!!!

TOR??? Bozak, Grabovski, Connolly, Steckel? These are not the guys that win you a cup! This is where it makes me sad thinking we could have had Tyler Seguin or Taylor Hall! Now Hall would just be a better Kessel IMO but besides the point. Now we have to make the best of what we have and somehow that is trying to acquire a #1 center or hoping beyond hope that Little Joe or Tyler Biggs can become one!

  6. That must be one hell of a cut on his hand. Did Anderson think his hand was steak?

  7. Most of the teams that win the cup do it with scoring and strong goaltending of course, but also they have every man buying into team defense and along with finishing their checks each player also back checks, which is one of the reasons the Leafs are in trouble.
While sitting 8th overall in goals for the Leafs are 28th in goals against and that cannot all be laid at the feet of their net minders. I know it can be a bit of a misnomer but a teams plus/minus can tell you a lot about their commitment to team defense. The Leafs are 14th out of 30 teams in that department with a combined home and away record of +1. If you look at a few teams who are considered cup contenders you will see that Boston is a combined +49, Detroit +42, Rangers and St. Louis at +41 and Vancouver at +30. These same five teams are in the top six in goals allowed per game and are justifiably proud of their team defense.
No matter if the Leafs bring in the best goalie that money can buy, they will not win until they have a strong team defense to go along with their team scoring.
