Latest on Jonathan Bernier, Andrei Markov, Blake Wheeler, Alex Burrows and Mike Zibanejad, Oilers GM give coach Dallas Eakins a vote of confidence, and the Flames call up a young forward.

TORONTO SUN: The Maple Leafs hope Jonathan Bernier is prepared for the upcoming stretch drive.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Leafs could make Bernier’s workload easier if they reduce their shots-against.

Andrei Markov denies receiving a one-year, $6 million offer from the Habs.

Andrei Markov denies receiving a one-year, $6 million offer from the Habs.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov offered no excuses for the failure of Russia’s men’s hockey team to medal at the Sochi Olympics. He also denied a report claiming the Habs offered him a one-year, $6 million contract. He said contract discussions are ongoing.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Regardless of Markov’s contract status I don’t believe they’ll move him at the trade deadline.

EDMONTON SUN: Oilers GM Craig MacTavish gave embattled coach Dallas Eakins a vote of confidence. “I still feel strongly Dallas Eakins is going to be the guy to lead this group for a long time,”he told the Sun’s Terry Jones.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Uh-oh, the dreaded “vote of confidence”. Cue dramatic music.

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: Jets winger Blake Wheeler is looking forward to helping his club make the playoffs.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: Canucks winger Alex Burrows has struggled with injuries and an inability to score but isn’t feeling sorry for himself.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Those injuries (broken foot, broken jaw, sprained left hand) have obviously taken a toll on his offensive game.

OTTAWA CITIZEN: Senators forward Mika Zibanejad isn’t fussy about where he plays. He’s been used as a center and a winger this season.

CALGARY SUN: Young Flames forward Markus Granlund could make his NHL debut this week.

  1. Alex Burrows is too good a hockey player to not bounce back. Hopefully he’ll get another shot with the Sedins and get off the schneid. Look for Kevin Bieksa to look more like himself as well. I see the Canucks playing really well down the stretch.
