NHL Canadian Corner – February 6, 2013.

Recaps of Tuesday’s games involving Canadian NHL teams, plus the latest on the Canucks, Oilers and Canadiens.

OTTAWA CITIZEN/BUFFALO NEWS: The Ottawa Senators took a 4-1 lead and held off a late charge by the Buffalo Sabres for a 4-3 win. Daniel Alfredsson and Erik Karlsson were among the Senators goals-scorers, while Tyler Ennis, Jordan Leopold and Jason Pominville tallied for the Sabres.

James van Riemsdyk scores twice as Leafs down Capitals.

van Riemsdyk scores twice as Leafs down Capitals.

TORONTO SUN/WASHINGTON POST: James van Riemsdyk scored twice and Phil Kessel had two assists as the Toronto Maple Leafs nipped the struggling Washington Capitals 3-2. Ben Scrivens made 24 saves for the win. Mike Ribeiro and Marcus Johansson scored for the Capitals.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Kessel has yet to score a goal this season, but has been contributing in other ways, especially in the play-making department. Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin’s offensive woes continue, as he had only one assist in this game.

CALGARY HERALD/DETROIT NEWS: Jarome Iginla scored his first of the season as the Calgary Flames dumped the Detroit Red Wings 4-1. It was a costly win as starting goalie Miikka Kiprusoff was forced from the game with a lower-body injury.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Kiprusoff is to be re-evaluated today. If it’s a serious injury, it could be a death blow to their season. “Kipper” has been a workhorse between the pipes, while backup Leland Irving has little NHL experience.

WINNIPEG SUN/MIAMI HERALD: Bryan Little scored the overtime winner as the Winnipeg Jets edged the Florida Panther 3-2. Blake Wheeler and Mark Stuart scored the other Jets goals, while Jonathan Huberdeau and Tomas Fleischmann scored for the Panthers.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: Tony Gallagher believes the more games the Canucks win now, it could help currently-sidelined Ryan Kesler be at his best come playoff time.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Mounting injuries have the Oilers facing their first crisis of the season.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: Canadiens rookie Brendan Gallagher is looking forward to his first meeting with the Boston Bruins.

  1. @ Beer googles

I would love for the leafs to go hard at ORiely …I would even do Kessel straight up !

Some players that the leafs should pursue with vigor !!

    Oilers……. Hatrkinainen
    Avs…………O’RIELY
    Wild ………Coyle
    Pitt ………..Sutter
    Islanders ..Neiderrieter
Anahiem ..Sheldon Souray ( Power play )
    Buffalo …. Foligno
    Calgary ….Kipper
Nashville ..Colin Wilson & Ryan Ellis
*****Rumour that Pitt has been interested in Kulimen for a year and a bit now ..looking to add him to the Neal Malkin line …Kulimen and malkin played together for years in Russia….

  2. @backchecking:
    Kessel for O’Reilly:
I would not trade Kessel for O’Reilly! I think Nonis should make an offersheet for O’Reilly! Kessel will start scoring goals again!
    Hartinkainen:
Don’t know too much about the guy, can he be a top 6 forward in the near future?
    Niederreiter:
I would go after him, but I think the Isles will not trade him! He will develop another season in the AHL and join the big club next summer!
    Sutter&Foligno: Buff & Pitt won’t trade them!
    Souray is too old!
Kipper will be too expensive! Just let Reims and Scrivens develop!
What the leafs also need is a real number one defenseman! If Phaneuf could regain his form from his early years as a Flame….. Last season his stats were not that bad, but…..

  3. @ Juss76
Its a contract thing with Kessel dude ..Leafs are not going to re sign him and your biggest need is a legit # 1 centerman ..if you don’ have that it doesn’t matter who plays on the wings ..this is purely a hockey deal ..this is a great opportunity to get a center man!! It would be a great trade for both teams , plus ORiely Kadri and Frattin and JVR together should be able to score more goals and start spreading them around having a deeper team as opposed to having to always just rely on Kessel …its time to cut ties on Kesel and get what you can hes a Ufa after next year!

Hartkinainen ….Kadri and Frattin would be lethal in years to come IMO …..he is going to be unreal!!

Souray is not that old and he has a monster from the point and we need POWER PLAY GOALS BAD!!!!!
purely for the power play shot!!

Rumour is Pitt want’s Kulimen ……Sutter is my starting point on that deal !!

I like Scrivens & Riems too …just tough to pass up a great goalie like that if available!!

  4. Typical Leaf fan. What makes you think that you can get ANY of those players? Huh? Hartikainen is just starting to show promise so why would the Oilers trade him? Because the Leafs want him? Grow up.

  5. @Backchecking

Someone mentioned Bozak Scrivens and a second rounder for O’Rielly which I would do in a heart beat. Scrivens will be a life long back up IMO and you know how I feel about Bozak. i doubt the Av’s do that deal.

Kessel for O’Rielly I don’t like. I would like to get way more for Kessel then O’Rielly.

We need a number one center and a number one defenseman. To bad we couldn’t pry Shea Weber loose now that he’s not scoring and has a monster contract. Maybe they would take Gardiner and ???

  6. I wounldn’t trade Kessel Just yet, wait and see what happens this summer with the free agent market, if they can’t get one of the boys from the ducks, then start listhening. If your going to shop anyone shop Phaneuf, wounldn’t get as much for him as Kessel, but you could use Kessel going forward, and If you could sign Perry or Getz, Kessel will probally stay and hit the 40 goal mark.
