The Maple Leafs “nine-point” checklist…Senators owner hoping to get Heatley bonus money back….Iginla could shine after All-Star break.

TORONTO SUN: Rob Longley’s “nine-point” checklist for the Maple Leafs heading into the final stretch of the season, including the need for reliable goaltending, secondary scoring, staying healthy, and GM Brian Burke’s efforts to bolster the roster.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Leafs have improved this season, but clinching a playoff berth is not a certainty. They cannot afford to falter over the remainder of the season.

OTTAWA SUN: An arbiter is set to hear Senators owner Eugene Melnyk’s grievance over having to pay a $4 million bonus to forward Dany Heatley prior to his being dealt to the San Jose Sharks in 2009. Both sides are trying to agree on a date for the hearing.

CALGARY SUN: Based on Jarome Iginla’s performance in previous seasons, he should be set to pop offensively following the All-Star break.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: If the Flames hope to make the playoffs, they’ll need Iginla to be an offensive force over the rest of the season.

  1. I”m doubtful any checklist for the Maple Leafs will bring about the kind of results they might seek in securing a playoff birth and advancing beyond the first round. Minor trades and tweaks seems to be what they will likely do and whether or not any of those tweaks will be enough to make the difference for them remains to be seen
