All-Star game becomes a salute to Daniel Alfredsson…Leafs face difficult path to playoffs…Five questions for the Jets…Five subplots for the Flames…Oilers not just developing players.

Daniel Alfredsson acknowledges cheers of Ottawa fans.

OTTAWA SUN: The 57th NHL All-Star game turned into a salute for long-time Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Deservedly so. Alfredsson’s coming to the end of his long career, and Ottawa fans know it and wanted to salute him. Nice to see he got the praise he deserved, and that he’s still capable of playing well this late in his career.

TORONTO SUN: With only ten point separating seventh overall from fifteenth overall in the Eastern Conference, the Maple Leafs will face a tough slog in their quest to clinch a playoff berth.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Consistency has become an issue for the Leafs over the past month, which will have to be addressed if they’re to make the playoffs for the first time since 2004.

WINNIPEG SUN: The Jets face five questions they must answer if they hope to make the playoffs.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: While the Jets obviously want to make the playoffs, they’ll be forgiven by Winnipeg fans if they fail to make it this season. They won’t be so fortunate in the years to come, as those fans will expect to see improvement next season.

CALGARY SUN: Five sub-plots facing the Flames as they return to action this week, including the need for more offensive production, and if they can take advantage of playing 19 of their final 32 games at home.

EDMONTON SUN: The Oilers are not just developing players in their farm system, but also perhaps a future general manager (Bill Scott) and head coach (Todd Nelson).

I don’t see how there only being 10 points from 7th to 15th is such a big deal. From 7th to 11th is 8 of those points so I only see maybe winnipeg being the other team with th leafs outside the playoffs that might make it. There is also only 9 points from 1st to 9th.
