NHL Canadian Corner – January 4, 2014

Flames blanked again, Oilers fall to the Ducks, plus the latest on Roberto Luongo, Bobby Ryan, Joffrey Lupul, Ondrej Pavelec and Alex Galchenyuk.

CALGARY HERALD: The Flames suffered their third shutout loss in four games, falling 2-0 to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

EDMONTON SUN: The Oilers squandered two early leads to fall 5-2 to the Anaheim Ducks.

Roberto Luongo set to return to the Canucks lineup.

Roberto Luongo set to return to the Canucks lineup.

VANCOUVER SUN: After missing two weeks with a groin strain, Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo is ready to return to action.

OTTAWA SUN: Team USA GM David Poile has issued an apology to Senators winger Bobby Ryan for comments about his intensity by Brian Burke, who was part of the club’s selection committee. Ryan, meanwhile, wishes to put the situation behind him.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Poile believed the behind-the-scenes coverage by ESPN.com and USA Today of the selection process would come under Team USA’s editorial review before being made public. He also claimed Burke was Ryan’s biggest supporter on the USA staff.  Still, the damage has been done. Ryan will eventually get over being left off this year’s version of Team USA but I think this has caused irreparable harm to his relationship with Burke.

TORONTO STAR: Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul avoided a suspension for his hit on Detroit Red Wings forward Patrick Eaves at the 2014 Winter Classic. However, he was fined $10K for the incident.

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: Jets starter Ondej Pavelec returns between the pipes today as his club faces off against the Boston Bruins.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: Canadiens sophomore forward Alex Galchenyuk confessed his disappointment over not being selected for Team USA.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The 19-year-old will get future opportunities to represent his country in other notable international tournaments. He’s having a very good season and has a bright future as an NHL star.

  1. Couple of thoughts.. So Lupal got fined 10k for admitting he wanted to crosscheck, just the arms not the head. Deliberate attempt to injure, got him a 10k fine. OH the humanity, how is he going to feed his kids??
Second, if Burke was Ryan’s biggest supporter and talked that much trash about him, I’d hate to find out what the rest of the Team USA crew has to say about Ryan. Bunch of snakes, all smiles in front of your face, stabbing you in the back and talkin trash behind your back.

    • Ya because no one ever gets cross checked in the NHL and everytime someone does its a deliberate attempt to injure and they get a 5 game suspension….

    • Admitting to crosscheck an opponent does not equate to attempt to injure. Eaves wears shoulder pads. He would have been just fine.

Saying that, I would’ve given lupul 2 games. Anybody with his injury history who is that careless with his stick deserves a little time to think it over.

      • Im not saying maybe he didnt deserve a game or 2 possibly but worse goes unpunished all the time, tiered of the whole “should have got suspended!…deliberate attempt to injure!” thing, every time a Leaf gets a penalty. Eaves has no concussion. Sticks come up all the time and guys get crossed checked. Im sure the fact that Lupul has been suspended 2 times in the last 2 or 3 years didnt help him get less punishment if anything they would have been harder on him if they thought there was reason to quit whining go watch curling if you cant stand to see guys gettin hurt.

        • …and there it is. always the need to personally attack anybody who disagrees with you. put the gloves back on dude.

    • Yup guess crosschecking to jaw ok even for repeat offender, And ya sure Ryan doesn’t believe that bs.

  2. Yah because that was his excuse, repeat offender, who has had his own share of injuries yet has no sense of respect for his fellow player. Weak excuse at the very least. I’m sure when Neal gave the knee to the head, he was really aiming for the stick but somehow hit his head as well. Im sure he deserves the benefit of the doubt.

    • Ya comparing that to Neals knee dosent seem to far off the mark not much of a difference there.

  3. It was a deliberate attempt to injure, and gave the guy a concussion. Crosschecking happens every game, crosschecking the head and giving the guy a concussion does not. Based on how the NHL claims to want to get those kinda hits outta the game, and the fact that a player got injured on the play and remains injured still, a 10k fine is hardly a deterrent.

    • saying the same thing over and over makes it no less incorrect. take a breath. relax. not the first shanny miss. won’t be the last.

  4. scott burnside needs to be taken to task over this bobby ryan story. no way any conversation regarding any player should’ve left that room. burnside just ruined any journalist’s chance of sitting in on such a process again.

  5. Lupul had full rights to get aggressive after the flying elbow moments before. He just went after the wrong guy is all. Quit whining it’s an aggressive game.

Ryan should have taken a cheap shot back at Burke starting with saying Burke has a big mouth. He also could have challenged him to a boxing match in a rented barn with all proceeds to charity. I could see Ryan pummelling Burke about 30 times before the old prick even got a punch off. LOL

    • You like that word, whining. Anybody who disagrees with you is whining. Anybody who posts something you disagree with is whining. Reality is, the more you use the word in retaliation, the more of a whiner you appear to be.

Love the rented barn idea. Add Kevin Lowe and make it a grudge match.

      • Actually I don’t think I’ve used the word “whining” before but I do like it and plan to use it more in 2014. LOL

Maybe Ryan can challenge Burkie to a square dance competition in a rented barn instead. God I wished Ryan had of taken a comedic approach to the whole thing. Burke has given everyone tons of comedy material. It would be like picking on Don Cherry at this point (like taking candy from a baby). Ryan could have said something totally derogatory but super funny that would have incensed Burke.
