NHL Canadian Corner – July 20, 2012.

Dream of Shea Weber as a Canuck is over, wondering what the Jets would do if Evander Kane got an offer sheet, more speculation on Daniel Alfredsson, Flames have big plans for Roman Cervenka, Scott Gomez scores at his own golf tournament, and two more ex-Leafs will take part in 2013 Winter Classic alumni games.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: The dream of Canucks fans of BC-born Shea Weber joining their team died yesterday when he inked his 14-year, $110 million offer sheet with the Philadelphia Flyers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: They’ll just have to take solace in the fact Jason Garrison, another BC-born defenseman, joined the Canucks as a free agent. Hmmm, not as sexy as Shea Weber though, is it?

Could Kane receive an offer sheet?

WINNIPEG SUN: Wondering what the Jets would do if Evander Kane got an offer sheet.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Well, after they got over their initial shock, probably match it, but I don’t think they’ll have to worry too much about Kane getting an offer sheet. Sure, it’s possible, but a recent report claimed Kane and the Jets were closing in on a six-year contract.

OTTAWA SUN: Though Daniel Alfredsson still hasn’t publicly made his decision if he’ll return with the Senators or retire, Don Brennan reads the tea leaves and believed “Alfie” not only has made his decision, but will indeed return next season, whenever it starts.

CALGARY HERALD: The Flames have big plans for new center Roman Cervenka, who to date has spent his entire career in Europe, penciling him into centering one of the top two lines.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Sure, it’s a gamble, putting a center who’s never played a single NHL game into that role, but it’s not as though the Flames have better options available to them, so why not? At worst, it won’t work, and at best, a new Flames star is born.

RDS.CA: Montreal Canadiens center Scott Gomez won an Acura at his own golf tournament in Anchorage, scoring a hole-in-one on the par-three sixth.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Insert jokes about how he can’t score on the ice here.

TORONTO SUN: Former Maple Leafs Mats Sundin and Tie Domi will be joining the Leafs alumni team for the 2013 Winter Classic games against the Detroit Red Wings alumni.

  1. So, Mister Spector, we meet again…
What do you think are the chances that Shea Weber goes to Philadelphia? Personally, I think the smart thing to do is for Nashville to keep him, and then trade him if they don’t like the deal after a year.

    • 50-50 he goes to the Flyers. It depends on the willingness of Predators ownership to match such a heavily front-loaded offer.

      • If the preds do sign him and are hoping to unload the salary in a year in order to actually get some legit players in return it would be very costly because of the amount (27) to be paid in the first year in which I believe they wouldnt be able to get out of paying since the trade would only be allowed after that second bonus is paid.

  2. I’m happy with Garrison Spector…Would love Weber but not sure why that comment was required.

    • Because it’s my site, my opinion, and quite frankly, Garrison is a far cry from Weber. Hope that clears it up for you.;)

  3. Lyle, when he wants your opinion, he’ll give it to you.

  4. Funny how Gomez has as many goals as hole-in-ones over the past year. Maybe he should pull a Happy Gilmour and take up golf. Bazingaaaaaa!

    • Or just get traded to the Leafs.. 😉

  5. So in other words another stupid comment.

  6. And I did just what you wanted, you were looking for that.

    • Must be hard to write with that hook in your mouth…;)

    • Please explain how the comment was stupid. It was an apt analogy.

  7. I believe (at least I think) if you ‘qualify a player’ it stops offer sheets.

I think that’s what Yzerman did with Stamkos last year.. don’t know why Poile did not do the same with Weber.

Preds have lost Hamhuis, Suter and most likely now Weber. I really feel for them. But the grass is not always greener…

  8. Like Gomez couldn’t afford to buy his own Acura. Maybe Sean is on to something, Gomer take on Golf!
