Latest contract signings by the Canadiens, Jets, Flames and Canucks.

Canadiens re-sign Lars Eller to a four-year deal.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: The Canadiens avoided arbitration with forward Lars Eller yesterday, re-signing him to a four-year, $14 million contract. Eller was slated for an arbitration hearing today.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I’m a little surprised by this contract, as it’s higher than the $3.1 million Eller reportedly sought. I’m assuming this means Eller will be playing a larger role with the Habs starting this season. About time, too, as he was bounced around the lineup too much last season.

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: After opting not to qualify defenseman Keaton Ellerby’s rights last month, the Jets re-signed him to a one-year, two-way contract worth $700K at the NHL level.

CALGARY SUN: The Flames have re-signed goaltender Joni Ortio to a two-year contract, the first season of which is a two-way deal.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: The Canucks have signed 2014 first-round pick Jared McCann to a three-year entry-level contract.

  1. i really like the change of direction and attitude the Canucks have taken since Gillis was fired and Linden took over. every hiring, trade, and draft pick was carefully considered then acted on quickly and decisively with none of the wishy washy dilly dallying that cost the Canucks the best goaltending tandem in the NHL for little or no return (Horvat, Matthias who’s a UFA end of the year, and Markstrom who doesn’t appear to be NHL bound). despite having plenty of opportunity to do so nothing bad or derrogatory has been said about players, coaches, or management no longer here (Bennings only comment about Kesler was that we don’t want players who don’t want to be here). players like McCann are the building blocks for the future of the Canucks and character doesn’t look to be an issue going forward.
