Maple Leafs re-sign James Reimer, Flames and Canucks re-sign their top draft picks, an update on P.K. Subban and more.

Leafs re-sign James Reimer to a two-year deal.

Leafs re-sign James Reimer to a two-year deal.

TORONTO SUN: The Maple Leafs avoided arbitration with goaltender James Reimer yesterday, re-signing him to a two-year, $4.6 million contract.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: That’s $2.3 million per season for Reimer, who requested a trade earlier this summer. Seems to me he realizes there’s not much of a trade market for his services right now. An improved performance this season, combined with his affordable new contract, could improve his market value. A rival club will be more interested in him carrying a two-year contract instead of a one-year deal.

SI.COM: Allan Muir believes the Montreal Canadiens will re-sign star defenseman P.K. Subban before his arbitration hearing on August 1.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Concur, and I also agree it’ll be a lucrative long-term deal. I’m guessing it’ll land somewhere between $7.5 – $8.5 million per season on an eight-year contract.

CALGARY SUN: The Flames have signed 2014 first-round pick Sam Bennett to a three-year entry-level contract.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: The Canucks also signed Jake Virtanen, their 2014 first-round pick. to a three-year entry-level deal.

EDMONTON JOURNAL:  The Oklahoma City Barons (AHL farm team of the Oilers) signed former NHL forward Jason Williams.

  1. The Leafs summer just keeps rolling along, 4.5 mill in space 23 guys signed, lots of room for Gardiner at around 3 mill, demote Orr and its a full roster with nearly 2 mill in room (could send another forward like Smith down or waivers for even more room to start the season, so it could be close to 3 mill in space) . Thats a good deal for Riemer, hope he bounces back this year.

  2. I agree with Spector that the Habs come to an agreement with PK before arbitration and I hope he is right on the term and money. However, I am more and more concerned, especially after the Eller contract, that an 8 year deal wil cost Mtl more in the 9.5 – 10.5 range. The 7.5-8.5 range might be accepted on a shorter term deal. Subban at 7.5 would be a steal IMO.

  3. poor reimer no chance this year to get out of the black hole they call leaf land too many goalies available out right now! I think pk will be 8.5 to 9 million to get it done for 8 yrs
