Leafs to try van Riemsdyk at center, Habs Diaz files for salary arbitration, and the latest signings by the Canucks, Flames and Oilers.

TORONTO SUN: The Maple Leafs will try recent acquisition James van Riemsdyk at center.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I suspected they might do this, considering the difficulty they’re having finding a natural scoring center.

LA PRESSE: Montreal Canadiens defenseman Raphael Diaz has filed for salary arbitration.

Backlund gets one-year deal with Flames.

CALGARY HERALD: The Flames have re-signed center Mikail Backlund to a one-year, $725K contract.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Backlund was considered a promising forward for the Flames, but injuries hampered his development. If he can have a healthy season, he could provide a bit of a boost to their offense.

EDMONTON SUN: In addition to re-signing goalie Devan Dubnyk (two years, $3.5 million), the Oilers also re-signed defenseman Jeff Petry to a two-year deal worth $1.75 million per.

VANCOUVER SUN: The Canucks signed former Hurricanes defenseman Derek Joslin and minor leaguer Patrick Mullen.

That’s just a ploy by Burke to take the heat off himself for not being able to get the players he needs to fill the holes. Next we will be hearing how they are going to try MacArthur in Goal because he played that position when he was a Tim bit.

  2. Cody Hall says:

Really like the Joslin signing, underrated puckmover who can really boost a 2nd PP unit. Would love to see him pair up with Tanev or Garrison

  3. Jay says:

Someone like Damon Cox who is not one of Burke’s favorites should write a column on Burkies timeline in Toronto…all the sound bites, things he promised, player signings or players he tried to go after and failed then with all his lame excuses afterwards. I think “most” people would be shocked on how bad he has failed in Toronto and hurt that team in the time he has been there. Most of the media surrounding the Toronto market “sugar coat the Leafs” would not dare expose him for what he really is…a failure. Leafs need to part ways with him and start fresh.

I agree except make it Kevin McGran from the TO star since he’s already in Burkes dog house after calling Reimers mom to get a legit story on Remier growing up He did ask her how she felt about Remiers concussion to which she replied he has had them in the past in Junior which infuriated Burke,

  4. JoeBoo says:

Jay, you’re absolutely right, and should the Leafs miss the playoffs this year, he, along with Carlyle, will be gone and the Leafs will do what the Habs did under their new (ish) ownership. Extensive GM/coach search, stock-pile prospects. I know Burke said he’s done this, but has he really? Just because you made it to Calder Cup doesn’t mean you have an abundance of prospects, in fact, Hamilton (MTL) won the Calder a few years ago!

  5. Captain Ahab says:

They should also write about how Phanuef is hated around the league and how star players do not want to come to a team that has him for a captain.

  6. crazy canuck says:

is there any possibility that burke could acquire both nash and getzlaf ?

  7. crazy canuck says:

if burke can’t turn it around by xmas i expect him to be replaced by pat quinn.he is extremely well liked by other gm’s which will help with player movement and he has the order of merit which can’t be a bad thing.

  8. Bulldog says:

Burke is one of the best GMs in the league. When this team turns the corner,it will be good for a long time. What he had when he started was a disaster. No GM in the league would have been able to fix it any faster.

  9. ziffles says:

You guys are deadly! No wonder anyone cant succeed in Toronto and to a lesser extent Canada.I remember a certain Gm in ottawa that was under this kind of pressure a year ago. And no more talk about him.His owner got behind him and now look.Toronto’s doomed with the kind of fan base it has. Most of leafs nation maybe should look in the mirror and you might see some of the problem. When things are going great blah blah blah when things are going bad blah blah blah, in the media blah blah blah.Ya burke has made mistakes, hes done some good things too that i didn’t think possible. He tried to move too fast. Geeez wonder were that pressure come from.Leafs need a owner to ban the media from the dressing rm and tell the nation to take a hike. When the team is built you junkies would be back in spades. Whipping the horse on the bandwagon. This has been going on since 67. Relax and let the guy try and fix the team it cant be that easy considering everyother Gm knows what kind of pressure Toronto puts on these guys team included!!!
