NHL Canadian Corner – June 18, 2014

Canucks to buy out David Booth, Canadiens re-sign Dale Weise, Senators talk contract with Milan Michalek, Flames seek a goaltending coach and an update regarding two key Hockey Night in Canada personnel.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: The Canucks yesterday placed winger David Booth on waivers with the intent of buying him out on Wednesday.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’s a wise decision. They have one compliance buyout remaining and must free up cap space to rebuild their roster. Booth has a long injury history and there’s no guarantee he can play the full 82-games next season.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: The Canadiens have re-signed forward Dale Weise to a two-year contract worth $2 million.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The acquisition of Weise scarcely drew attention last season but he proved a valuable addition for the Habs, especially in the playoffs.

OTTAWA CITIZEN: Ken Warren reports the Senators are in the midst of contract talks with pending UFA winger Milan Michalek.

CALGARY SUN: The Flames are in the market for a new goaltending coach. Clint Malarchuk won’t be returning next season.

SPORTSNET.CA: Elliotte Friedman and Scott Oake have joined Rogers NHL broadcast team. They will continue to appear on Hockey Night in Canada.

  1. Nice contract for Weise I hated that deal at first, but he did prove to be a great pick up.

Figured Rogers would have to take Friedman, he is one of the best covering the sport imo. Hopefully he gets a little bigger of a role with the new format.

    • Agreed. Friedman instantly becomes the most credible member of Sportsnet’s staff.

      • I agree about Friedman, but Oake asks some of the dumbest and some of the most obvious questions. Could have done without him.

  2. What about dan cloutier as goal tending coach
