NHL Canadian Corner – June 28, 2012.

Leafs GM has no plans to pursue big name UFAs, Jay Bouwmeester’s future in Calgary, Senators interested in Parenteau, Oilers and Canuck make pitches for Schultz, and the latest on the Canadiens and Jets.

SPORTSNET.CA: Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke, speaking at the PEI Special Olympics Luncheon Festival, admitted he doesn’t believe his club will be in the bidding for top pending UFAs Zach Parise and Ryan Suter.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Parise and Suter probably haven’t put Toronto on their list of preferred destinations. Besides, as the article noted, the Leafs already have over $57 million invested in 18 players for next season, giving them about $12 million of available cap space.

Bouwmeester’s future in Calgary in doubt?

CALGARY HERALD: George Johnson wonders if the addition of Dennis Wideman put Jay Bouwmeester’s future with the Flames in doubt. He’s not the only observer pondering that question.

OTTAWA CITIZEN: Senators director of player personnel Pierre Doiron, speaking at a business luncheon, admitted his club would have interest in NY Islanders winger P.A. Parenteau, provided he does opt for UFA status on July 1 and if the price was right.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Senators won’t be the only club which will likely have interest in Parenteau, who could net a big payday thanks to the lack of quality depth in this summer’s UFA market.

EDMONTON JOURNAL/VANCOUVER SUN: The Oilers and Canucks have made their offers to pending UFA blueliner Justin Schultz.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: Canadiens forward Mathieu Darche seems headed for the UFA market, while fellow pending UFA Brad Staubitz hopes to re-sign with the Habs.

WINNIPEG SUN: The Jets will hold their first development camp from July 9-13 at the MTS Iceplex.

  1. I think Darche will hit the UFA market but still could end up with the Habs. Unless he gets a out of wack offer, he will give the Habs a chance to match. The guy loves being a Hab…but like I said the price must ne right.

  2. Dorion expressing interest in a not-yet UFA borders on tampering. I know that’s not his intention, but the league doesn’t like that kind of thing.

  3. Maybe all the everyone to Leafs rumors will be put to rest now.

  4. i thought schultz couldn’t sign with anyone until july1.if he has received offers isn’t tampering ?b.burke was afraid to even mention shultzs name for fear of tampering charges and now he has received offers from two teams.what gives ?

    • He can receive them just not sign them until the 1st.

  5. Darche is a 4th liner, but MTL needs more grit at this position. Unfortunately, he can’t provide that in this hard pace hockey at this stage of his career.
