The Maple Leafs, Senators and Oilers await Justin Schultz’s decision, Schneider signing ensures Luongo on the way out of Vancouver, updates on the contract negotiations of Carey Price and PK Subban, the Flames prepare for UFA period, and Winnipeg may not be a preferred destination for this summer’s top UFAs.

TORONTO STAR/OTTAWA SUN/EDMONTON SUN: The Maple Leafs, Senators and Oilers have made their pitches to UFA blueline prospect Justin Schultz and await his decision.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: The Canucks re-signing Cory Schneider to a three-year contract is a clear sign Roberto Luongo is being replaced.

Habs, Subban to start contract talks next week.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: Contract talks between the Canadiens and defenseman P.K. Subban are slated to begin next week, while goalie Carey Price recently tweeted he hoped to have a new deal in place with the next couple of weeks.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It had been rumored a Price re-signing could be close. Evidently, the speculation the Habs and Subban had already talked contract were wrong. Yes, both will be eligible to receive offer sheets from rival clubs, but it appears Habs management aren’t concerned over it, especially Price, since they’re taking him to arbitration. Hat tip to a couple of my Twitter followers for reminding me about Price’s arbitration. Been a busy couple of days…;)

CALGARY HERALD: Flames GM Jay Feaster expects to be active in the upcoming UFA market. He could pursue a top name, gritty role players, or even a backup goalie.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Gritty role players and backup goalies are plentiful this summer, so Feaster won’t have much difficulty finding what he wants in those departments. He’ll find it tough to entice one of the few notable UFAs to become a Flame.

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: Ed Tait reports a high-powered agent recently told him Winnipeg is on the list of many players with movement clauses don’t want to be dealt to. Tait doesn’t expect the Jets would have a chance to sign big name UFAs like Zach Parise, Ryan Suter or Shane Doan. He feels the fact Winnipeg isn’t a popular destination for free agents is a reality Jets management has to deal with.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: What could change that perception is if the Jets can build themselves into not just a playoff contender, but also a Cup contender.
