NHL Canadian Corner – June 30, 2014

Reaction to the Sam Gagner trade, James Reimer requests a trade, Senators in limbo with Jason Spezza, Canucks fans support ailing Gino Odjick, and the latest on the Canadiens, Flames and Jets.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Jim Matheson believes Sam Gagner was a class act who deserved better with the Oilers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’ll be interesting to see how Gagner fares with the Arizona Coyotes. If he achieves the stardom there which seemed to elude him in Edmonton, Oilers fans will be furious over how he was handled by their team.

Leafs goalie James Reimer requests a trade.

Leafs goalie James Reimer requests a trade.

TORONTO STAR: James Reimer’s trade request could further thin the ranks of the Maple Leafs. “ Nikolai Kulemin, Dave Bolland, Mason Raymond, Jay McClement, Troy Bodie and Paul Ranger are all heading toward unrestricted status.”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It could prove difficult to find a trade partner for Reimer as there’s not much of a market for goalies this summer. It was reported last night the Leafs and Jets had talk about Reimer during the draft. It remains to be seen if those talks are revisited.

OTTAWA CITIZEN: Having failed to trade Jason Spezza during the draft weekend, the Senators enter the UFA period in limbo.  It’s possible the St. Louis Blue and Chicago Blackhawks could revisit interest in Spezza,

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Despite Spezza rejecting a trade to Nashville and Predators GM David Poile’s comments which suggest he’s no longer interested (especially after acquiring James Neal), speculation persists the Predators could still be a trade option. That’s only if Spezza is willing to change his mind.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: It’s increasingly likely Brian Gionta, Mike Weaver and Francis Bouillon will test the UFA market. GM Marc Bergevin hasn’t ruled out signing any of them. Contract talks continue with P.K. Subban.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: While  a rival club could sign Subban to an offer sheet, it would be a futile measure as the Habs have more than enough cap space to match it.  Subban would also have to agree to sign an offer sheet. Given his stated intent to remain a Hab, that might not happen.

WINNIPEG SUN: A list of possible UFA targets for the Jets, including Jussi Jokinen, Brian Boyle, Benoit Pouliot, Steve Ott and Leo Komarov.

CALGARY SUN: The Flames could seek a defenseman and a backup goalie in this summer’s UFA market.

VANCOUVER SUN: Canucks fans turn out in support of ailing former Canuck Gino Odjick at the hospital where he’s receiving treatment for a terminal heart disease. Odjick surprised the fans by coming out to thank them.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I hope I never face a terminal illness like Odjick, but if I do, I hope I have at least half as much courage as he does.
