NHL Canadian Corner – March 12, 2014

Oilers edge the Wild, Leafs come undone against the Sharks, plus updates on Jason Spezza, Carey Price, Dustin Byfuglien and more.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Viktor Fasth got his first victory with the Oilers backstopping his new club to a 4-3 comeback victory in a shootout against the Minnesota Wild.

James van Riemsdyk is shaken up after he was accidentally hit by teammate Dion Phaneuf.

TORONTO STAR: Joe Thornton and Joe Pavelski enjoyed three-point performances while Tommy Wingels had a Gordie Howe hat trick as the San Jose Sharks thumped the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-2.  Jake Gardiner scored both Leaf goals.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It was such a bad game for the Leafs that their biggest hit of the night was Dion Phaneuf missing a hit on Sharks forward Patrick Marleau and plastering instead teammate James van Riemsdyk. It was that kind of game for the Leafs.

OTTAWA SUN: Senators captain Jason Spezza has stepped up his play recently, with 14 points in his last nine games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Sens need Spezza at his best if they’re to play their way into a playoff berth.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: Canadiens goalie Carey Price (lower body injury) is improving but won’t be in the lineup tonight when the Habs face the Boston Bruins.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Best not to rush him back and risk re-aggravating the injury. They need a healthy Price for the upcoming playoffs.

WINNIPEG SUN: Dustin Byfuglien has been a force since being moved from defense to forward.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Byfuglien in my opinion is a better forward than defenseman. Use him on the point on the power-play but otherwise keep him on the wing at even strength.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: Has Canucks coach John Tortorella lost his players?

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Since their 7-4 meltdown against the Islanders there’s speculation the Canucks could fire Tortorella and perhaps even GM Mike Gillis.

CALGARY SUN: Curtis Glencross (high ankle sprain) will make his return to the lineup tonight against the Anaheim Ducks.

  1. Keep Gardiner get rid of Franson.

    • and don’t forget to keep protecting Bernier’s confidence with the easier start and keep hanging Reimer out to dry on night number two when the team never shows up.

      • Not sure out of Ducks or Sharks which is an easier start.
