Senators team president claims tax hit could hurt the Senators…No point in Maple Leafs firing their coach now…Jets enjoy rare 5-on-1 break in big win over Panthers…Habs blow lead, but get lucky in shootout….Flames down Coyotes…Young Oilers need to earn respect…Canucks defeat the Blues.
OTTAWA SUN: Senators president Cyril Leeder claims a proposal by the Ontario government to scrap a tax exemption for corporate season ticket holders could not only cost the club corporate support, but could put the team out of business.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: What’s this? A team in a Canadian market claiming they need a corporate tax break to survive? But…but….I thought Canadian teams all enjoyed strong fan bases and had no need for tax breaks to survive? I though Canadian teams stood better chances of survival than those in the US Sun Belt? Why, if the Senators can’t make a go of it in Ottawa, perhaps they need to move to a better market, like Quebec City, or Atlanta.
Yes, I’m being sarcastic, because with all due respect to Mr. Leeder, I don’t believe his claim that eliminating a tax break for corporate season ticket holders will put the Senators out of business. And if it does, then they had no business being in a market which can’t support it in the first place. Ontario cabinet minister Bob Chiarelli expresses doubt over Leeder’s claim, and also pointed out this proposal wasn’t a done deal. I believe Mr. Chiarelli does a nice job poking a hole into Mr. Leeder’s “we need a tax break to survive” balloon.
TORONTO SUN: Steve Simmons chides those Maple Leafs fans calling on Ron Wilson to be fired, since it’s now too late for that to have any positive impact on saving their season. Simmons believes it should’ve happened before the trade deadline.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The knives are certainly out for Wilson now, but it’s understandable, given the continuing struggles of the Leafs and the fans growing impatience for this franchise to improve.
WINNIPEG SUN: The Jets enjoyed a lopsided 7-0 win over the Florida Panthers, including a rare 5-on-1.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Holy “Mighty Ducks“, Batman!
MONTREAL GAZETTE: The Canadiens blew a 4-1 to the Minnesota Wild, but caught a break in overtime as Wild winger Devin Setoguchi stumbled and fell during the shootout, sealing a 5-4 win for Montreal.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Poor Setoguchi, that stumble is gonna be on highlight and sports blooper reels forever.
CALGARY HERALD: The Flames kept their playoff hopes alive, snapping the Phoenix Coyotes’ 12-game unbeaten streak with a 4-2 victory.
EDMONTON JOURNAL: Taylor Hall and his young teammates have to pay their dues and play with more discipline when faced with bad calls.
VANCOUVER PROVINCE: The Canucks shut out the St Louis Blues 2-0 to remain atop the Western Conference standings.
