NHL Canadian Corner – March 2, 2012.

Senators team president claims tax hit could hurt the Senators…No point in Maple Leafs firing their coach now…Jets enjoy rare 5-on-1 break in big win over Panthers…Habs blow lead, but get lucky in shootout….Flames down Coyotes…Young Oilers need to earn respect…Canucks defeat the Blues.

OTTAWA SUN: Senators president Cyril Leeder claims a proposal by the Ontario government to scrap a tax exemption for corporate season ticket holders could not only cost the club corporate support, but could put the team out of business.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: What’s this? A team in a Canadian market claiming they need a corporate tax break to survive? But…but….I thought Canadian teams all enjoyed strong fan bases and had no need for tax breaks to survive? I though Canadian teams stood better chances of survival than those in the US Sun Belt? Why, if the Senators can’t make a go of it in Ottawa, perhaps they need to move to a better market, like Quebec City, or Atlanta.

Yes, I’m being sarcastic, because with all due respect to Mr. Leeder, I don’t believe his claim that eliminating a tax break for corporate season ticket holders will put the Senators out of business. And if it does, then they had no business being in a market which can’t support it in the first place. Ontario cabinet minister Bob Chiarelli expresses doubt over Leeder’s claim, and also pointed out this proposal wasn’t a done deal. I believe Mr. Chiarelli does a nice job poking a hole into Mr. Leeder’s “we need a tax break to survive” balloon.

TORONTO SUN: Steve Simmons chides those Maple Leafs fans calling on Ron Wilson to be fired, since it’s now too late for that to have any positive impact on saving their season. Simmons believes it should’ve happened before the trade deadline.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The knives are certainly out for Wilson now, but it’s understandable, given the continuing struggles of the Leafs and the fans growing impatience for this franchise to improve.

WINNIPEG SUN: The Jets enjoyed a lopsided 7-0 win over the Florida Panthers, including a rare 5-on-1.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Holy “Mighty Ducks“, Batman!

Aftermath of Setoguchi's embarrassing shootout stumble against Montreal.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: The Canadiens blew a 4-1 to the Minnesota Wild, but caught a break in overtime as Wild winger Devin Setoguchi stumbled and fell during the shootout, sealing a 5-4 win for Montreal.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Poor Setoguchi, that stumble is gonna be on highlight and sports blooper reels forever.

CALGARY HERALD: The Flames kept their playoff hopes alive, snapping the Phoenix Coyotes’ 12-game unbeaten streak with a 4-2 victory.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Taylor Hall and his young teammates have to pay their dues and play with more discipline when faced with bad calls.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: The Canucks shut out the St Louis Blues 2-0 to remain atop the Western Conference standings.

  1. That Habs game was the strangest game I’ve seen. Crazy missed call on Pax, the call on Kaberle where he didn’t even touch the guy, the hugest hit being Hab on Hab, the big come back.. and it all ending with that fail. Even the announcer said at the time he wasn’t even surprised it happened after watching that game.

Either way.. no more winning ok? (well maybe tomorrow cause it’s TO)… but I want a nice pick this year!

  2. Hey FIreWilson…….
What’s your name gonna be next year? Because if ol’ Double B has half a brain you are going to get your wish in the off season!!!!……scrap that, he must only have half a brain because WIlson still has a job. I hear jacques Martin is available……..

  3. What is 1/4 brain Gauthier going to do in the off season? I hear Jacques Martin is available…..

  4. Depending on what gets done in the off season by Burke I may have something new to complain about and therefore create a name around it.

  5. Felt bad for Devin Setoguchi’s stumble and fall…. couldn’t even laugh at it or anything.

  6. @ FireWilson, if you get your wish, and Wilson is fired, I have a new name suggestion how about Habssuk?

  7. Would have been interesting in Carey price had a mic on when Setoguchi fell over like that.

  8. Can we not turn this into a TSN comment section; Habs suck, Leafs suck, no you suck, no you suck. Unless of course you’re still in primary school. Neither team’s fans, right now, has anything to say to the other.

  9. Just wanted to tell a Habs fan not to throw bricks from a glass house.
I lived in Montreal for 5 years, and trust me, they need to be reminded on a daily basis.

  10. @NikK Agree, it was uncalled for provocation by Habsfan77, but you know it’s the retaliation that always gets called.

  11. @gravitymike… Looks like i’m serving 2 minutes!

  12. I could make my new name “StickWithGauthier” if you guys like….

I’m not counting my chickens just yet, Burke is a subborn guy. If the Leafs go on a win streak and finish just shy of making the playoffs I wouldn’t put it past Burke to keep him for the start of next year. Wilson has Burke convinced he is the second coming…

I remember the same thing with Pat Quinn. Terrible with young players near the end of his carrear.

  13. Ron Wilson was fired! YES! Takes a drink

  14. @NikK,
I think you give Gauthier too much credit in the brain section lol!!! I’m not denying my Habs suck this year, but hey, they’re my team, watcha gonna do.
