NHL Canadian Corner – May 23, 2012.

Updates on the Oilers, Flames and Canadiens respective searches for new head coaches, Senators forward Brad Winchester’s slow recovery from concussion, and Jets ownership preaches patience.

Could Brent Sutter becomes Oilers new coach?

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Oilers president Kevin Lowe is keeping mum on who could be his team’s next head coach. While he singled out former Calgary Flames coach Brent Sutter as a worthy candidate, he denied his organization has had any talks with Sutter about the job. Assistant coach Kelly Buchberger, meanwhile, remains in limbo hoping he’ll still have a job once the new head coach is announced.

CALGARY HERALD: Flames GM Jay Feaster said his search for a new head coach has “reached the middle innings”.

CANOE.CA: Former Canadiens GM Andre Savard believes Michel Therrien would be a good choice to coach the Habs. Therrien was Canadiens coach under Savard ten years ago.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Habs should avoid “blasts from the past” – unless Scotty Bowman intends to come out of retirement to return behind the Canadiens bench – and seek someone new as head coach. Therrien had his shot.

OTTAWA SUN: Senators forward Brad Jesse Winchester is feeling much better in his recovery from a concussion though he’s not fully healed yet. He’s yet to have contract talks with Senators management but remains hopeful of staying in Ottawa.

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: Jets co-owner Mark Chipman continues to preach patience regarding his team’s development a year after they were relocated to Winnipeg from Atlanta.

  1. I’m glad Savard didn’t land the job as GM. I don’t want to see Therrien as coach. Refreshing interview with Spacek… gives us some insight into how dysfunctional the management AND coaching staff really was.

  2. Lyle, you’re actually referring to Jesse Winchester not Brad Winchester. Jesse’s a very versatile forward who can kill penalties and add energy to the third and fourth lines. The team missed his experience, especially during the playoff series against NYR.
On another note, I was told recently that some NHL teams are fully expecting a work stoppage this fall and the negotiations are going to be acrimonious (When aren’t they!).
Can you enlighten or update us on this in a future column?

    • Ranzeir, thanks for the heads-up, correction made.
