Updates on the Canucks, Oilers and Jets, and trying to determine why most Canadian NHL teams suck.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: The Canucks yesterday formally introduced new general manager Jim Benning to the media. The verdict? He’s mundane but should be effective.

VANCOUVER SUN: Iain MacIntyre believes the Canucks now need the right head coach. He considers Nashville’s Barry Trotz the best option.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Who cares about what Benning looks and sounds like? The only thing that matters is how well he does his job. As for Trotz, I realize the main reason he hasn’t been hired yet is most teams seeking new head coaches are also still in the market for a new general manager.  Still, any GM who laments not hiring Trotz when they had the chance has no one to blame but themselves for dragging their feet so long.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: David Staples takes Vancouver Province curmudgeon Tony Gallagher to task for chiding Oilers Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins for not joining Team Canada at this year’s World Championships.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: If players don’t want to accept an invitation to participate in the World Championships after a long season, that’s their business.  In the case of these three, they’re coming off a long, miserable, mentally-draining series. Even if they were completely healthy, I don’t blame them for taking a pass on Team Canada this year and get away from hockey for a little while.

WINNIPEG SUN: Paul Friesen reminisces over the  original Jets winning the AHL Avco Cup 35 years ago.

OTTAWA CITIZEN: James Gordon recently examined the real reason Canadian teams aren’t winning the Stanley Cup.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Beat you to it five months ago, James. Put simply, Canadian teams have sucked for over 20 years largely because of bad management.

  1. The province is such a negative rag these days…other than watching the train wreck that they are, there is no real value in anything they say. They have gone to the extreme these days of only looking at the negative…”mundane…not a rock star…unfortunate haircut”. Seriously?? You don’t see this sort of reporting on legit news sources like TSN, Sportsnet, ESPN, Spector’s….

    • Ummm Espn seriously?
