NHL Canadian Corner – Monday, July 15, 2013.

Canadiens likely out of bidding for Jagr and Morrow, Oilers GM “reasonably comfortable with his club’s depth, Dave Bolland hears his first cheers from Toronto fans, Flames coach Hartley sets expectations for his club’s prospects, and Derek Meech heads to the KHL.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: Pat Hickey reports the Canadiens recent re-signing of forward Ryan White to a one-year, $700K contract puts them out of the market for bidding on veteran UFAs like Jaromir Jagr or Brenden Morrow. The Habs now have over $63.6 million invested in 23 players, prompting Hickey to suggest if GM Marc Bergevin plans any other moves, they’ll have to come via trade.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Looks like the additions of Daniel Briere and George Parros are Bergervin’s only significant moves this summer. There were rumors in late-June of the Habs shopping Tomas Plekanec but that’s died out now.

Is Ales Hemsky on the trade block?

Is Ales Hemsky on the trade block?

EDMONTON JOURNAL: David Staples cited a recent interview by Brad Bartko with Oilers GM Craig MacTavish, who claimed he’s reasonably comfortable with his club’s depth. MacTavish declined to speak about a possible trade of winger Ales Hemsky, who’s been frequently mentioned in the rumor mill of late.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Hemsky’s name will likely stay in the rumor mill throughout the summer, but it remains to be seen if MacTavish can find a taker for his $5 million salary for the upcoming season. A Hemsky trade might have to wait until later in the season, when he’s burned off some of that salary, or unless MacTavish is willing to pick up part of his salary.

TORONTO SUN: New Maple Leaf Dave Bolland heard the cheers of Toronto fans for the first time Saturday, when he was introduced as the grand marshall for Saturday’s Indy Race in Toronto.

CALGARY HERALD: Flames head coach Bob Hartley told the 44 prospects who gathered last week for the Flames development camp anything less that tip-top fitness levels won’t be tolerated.

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: Former Jets defenseman Derek Meech has signed with Dinamo Minsk of the KHL.

  1. @ The Montreal Gazette ….OBVIOUSLY you have not heard of making a trade to create cap space for an addition such as Morrow, if you can get him at a decent asking price for a 2 – 3 year deal, signing White should not be an indication the Habs are finished and this is the Roster in October ….Bergevin is looking to make a deal !

    • According to you everybody is… your like an Ek mini me.

  2. MB has stated numerous times that he’s always looking to make the team better. He has also stated numerous times to be patient. He has definitely set a path to be more like the Hawks and Wings by building the team from within starting at the draft table and using trades and FA’s to plug into specific defined needs. The coaching and management team he has put together in Montreal and Hamilton are obviously geared much more towards player development. He has also been realistic in that the team is 2-3 years away at least from contending for the cup. With so many veterans hitting UFA next summer, the team will have enough to re-sign the rest of their young core of Subban, Emelin, and Eller. Briere then comes off the books in time to re-sign the the Galleys and Tinordi. Coincidence? Not likely. This team has a plan and a vision in place. We as fans just need to be patient and let it be executed by the pros that Molson has put in place.
