Jets captain Andrew Ladd celebrates one of his two goals against the Sharks.

WINNIPEG SUN: Andrew Ladd scored the game-tying goal and the winner in a shootout as the Jets nipped the San Jose Sharks 5-4. It marked the first time since early October the Jets managed consecutive wins.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: The Canadiens “kid line” of Alex Galchenyuk, Lars Eller (one goal, two assists each) and Brendan Gallagher (1 goal, one assist) lifted their club to 4-2 win over the New York Islanders, snapping their four-game losing streak.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: The Canucks ended their four-game road trip on a losing note (1-2-1) falling to the Anaheim Ducks 3-1.

EDMONTON SUN: The Oilers lost again, falling 5-4 to the Chicago Blackhawks.

TORONTO STAR: Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf seems to be maturing in his role this season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: And yet a surprising number of Leafs fans want him traded or for the club to replace him via free agency.

OTTAWA CITIZEN: Barring a setback, Senators goalie Craig Anderson should return to action on Tuesday when his club faces off against the Philadelphia Flyers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Thanks to the strong play of backup Robin Lehner during Anderson’s absence, the Senators actually improved. Could be a goaltending duel shaping up in Ottawa this season.

CALGARY HERALD: Former Oilers defenseman Ladislav Smid is trying to adjust to life with the Flames.

  1. Smid trying to adjust lol… it must take some getting used to being on a young building team thats playing beyond expectations and is not in the basement of the western conference. He is not used to hope.

    • Here are a few names Oilers passed on to draft Yakupov…..?????

      Ryan Murray
      Morgan Rielly
      Griffin Rhienhart
      Jacob Trouba
      Oli Matta
      Cody Ceci

      • They all are YOUNG defencemen, who are adjusting to a new league with better competition. So are you saying that Yakupov is a bust? Yeah the Oilers need defencemen but we need a top pairing experience d defencemen. Some of those players aren’t even in the NHL on a nightly basis. So I let’s not jump to conclusions.

  2. Phaneuf for Gagner just feels right to me. Make it happen.

    • Can’t say enough good things about Habs Galagher !!!

Bryan Murray will get a boat load for Anderson right now is the time to make a move there, Murray always pulls off a quality trade !

If Dion is at his peak right now then move him for a quality top 6 player back then make a second trade to bring in a bonifide shut down D man even if it costs a 1st rounder this year in the deal !

Smid just needs to play defense ..block shots ….hit in the corners.. take the stick in front of the net and make a quality first pass up the boards when the puck is on his stick !!
      Thats IT!!

    • Dumb

    • Absolutely, Kyle! Send Gunnerson on his way too, along with Kulemin.

  3. Special note :
Thank you to all of you who have given and sacrificed so that we have the freedom to express our views here while living in a free country that allows us to play the best game in the world …

    Thank you !

    • thumbs up

  4. Amen

  5. Phaneuf SHOULD NOT be traded and if the Leafs were to trade him they would take a massive step backwards. First off, there is this myth that Phaneuf is bad with the puck and makes too many defensive lapses and it is just false. Phaneuf is often having to over compensate for his partner in Gunnerson who is not a top 2 defensive pairing guy. Phaneuf puts up points, blocks shots, plays physical, and eats a lot of minutes playing very well against the best players in all of the NHL. The Leafs do not have another guy who can fill that role, they need to focus on getting him a better defensive partner.

Phaneuf, Franson, Reilly, MacWilliam, Gardiner should be the locks on the Leafs blueline for the future.

As for the Senators, I’d be all for them moving Anderson. This is Lehner’s team and it has been a long time coming and there are quite a few teams who would love to get Anderson. However if they are moving him they need to address some defensive depth within their system. My bet however is that Anderson will be moved to the Islanders in the off-season to replace Nabakov.
