Canadiens, Senators and Jets collect wins, Maple Leafs and Flames suffer defeats, plus the latest on Justin Schultz and the Canucks.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: David Desharnais scored the game winner and Carey Price made 24 saves as the Canadiens downed the Buffalo Sabres 3-1 for their fourth straight victory. Earlier in the day, the Canadiens announced they re-signed assistant GM Rick Dudley to a multi-year extension.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: That effectively takes Dudley out of contention for the Sabres vacant post of general manager.

OTTAWA SUN: Zack Smith tallied the late game-winning goal as the Senators downed the Washington Capitals 6-4. Bobby Ryan scored twice and Chris Phillips had a two-point game for the Senators, who held Capitals superstar Alexander Ovechkin to just one assist.

WINNIPEG SUN: Mark Stuart, Andrew Ladd and Devin Setoguchi scored in just over a five minute span in the second period to give the Winnipeg Jets a 3-2 win over the New York Islanders.

TORONTO STAR: The Maple Leafs blew a two-goal lead to fall 6-5 in a shootout to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Evgeni Malkin scored the game-tying and winning goals for the Penguins. The loss spoiled a two-goal performance from James van Riemsdyk, while Tyler Bozak, Phil Kessel and Nazem Kadri also tallied for the Leafs.

CALGARY SUN: Patrick Kane’s two goals, including the winner with 18 seconds left in regulation, lifted the Chicago Blackhawks to a 3-2 win over the Calgary Flames, who blew a 2-0 lead. Reto Berra made 27 saves for the Flames.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: Canucks coach John Tortorella is shuffling his lines again, moving Ryan Kesler back to center and calling upon goalie Roberto Luongo to step up his play. The Canucks also reportedly had mild interest in Washington Capitals winger Martin Erat but such a move would require shipping David Booth’s toxic contract to the Capitals, which isn’t likely to happen.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Oilers young defenseman Justin Schultz is learning on the fly how to play without the puck at the NHL level.

Square peg round hole over coached, tuned out… whatever you wanna call it I think Nonis better begin thinking who can replace Carlyle. This team is not responding. Questionable decisions McClement (who has been great in his role as a 4th line and on th pk) playing 20 mins a night. Sitting Gardiner playing Ranger? Leaving Reimer in to get shelled against the Preds etc etc. Alot of the questions about how this team performs lead straight back to behind the bench. I think they have tuned him out.

    #firecarlyle

    • LEAFS ……a pig with lipstick at this point !!
I agree somewhat with Shticky …

I posted here a few days ago about a number of things i keep seeing in the Leafs and I will say it again !!!

#1) Carlyle is and has been mismanaging his bench and it keeps coming up again and again and again !!! some players are over playing in the third period when he has BIG fresh legs on the bench 2 lines deep these collapses keep happening becuase he relies on just a few players who can not handle this situation like other star players or teams such as Boston can ….if Leafs want to be successful they have to play 4 lines deep the WHOLE GAME and into the 3rd …

#2) Missing clutch goals …and a better body presence …should bring up Leivo and DeVanne ASAP !!!

      3) outside last night Lupul , Kessel , JVR had a combines 6 points in 12 games all together ….thats Flyers statistics ….

      4) Carlyle needs to play 1 goalie moving forward RIGHT NOW !!!!
Reimer should get the next 3 starts NO MATTER WHAT and just GO!!!!

      5) They desperately NEED a better BIG D man who is reliable in front of the net …this is HUGE !! cause they SUCK BAD at this position absolutely terrible ,,,terrible !!~

      6) Still the same core guys who they keep giving MILLIONS to that collapsed and missed the playoffs …collapsed in game 7 and keep collapsing in 3rd periods almost every game !! BIG PROBLEM …Fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me !! ….well ….shame on me !!

If a Reimer , Kadri , Phanuef , 1st rounder can land Weber I would make that trade today !! …100%

      • TML says:

Why would you call for them to play Reimer for the next 3 games and suggest trading him at the same time? I think we all know that one of the goalies is going to be shopped at some point and I think it’s fairly clear that Reimer will be the one getting moved. In order to boost his trade value while still giving your eventual #1 playing time you have to play both. It’s not ideal – one guy needs to get into rhythm, but this is the situation we find ourselves in until they decide to make a move.
Can Kadri settle down and just play hockey? That hit on the goalie was completely unnecessary and completely changed the momentum of that game.

        • @ TML

I feel Reimer should get a string of starts …YES…at the same time I am suggesting a trade scenario …and taking into consideration that Rinner is hurt long term I know Nashville would ask for a goalie in that deal a top 6 player and a top 2 defender thats why I put James in there ….Iam a HUGE Reimer fan and thats why I said to just play him going forward …but also being realistic with any type of deal for Weber ( if even possible ) thats what it would take !

Way to hang in there…. a true=blue Leaf fan….. able to jump on and off a bandwagon at a moment’s notice. You’re going to be frothing at the mouth by Christmas because the December schedule is brutal. Enjoy!

      • Shticky says:

LOL frothing might be a bit of an overstatement. Bandwagon jumping? Ive followed this team for over 40 years Ive seen worse, just saying that at dome point you have to look at the root of the problem. Kostka Gardiner O Byrne Holzer Fraser Ranger Franson Phaneuf Gunnarson Reilly Liles Holzer and still brutal defensively and not getting any better. Maybe the issue has something to do with the systems or the message. Either way it comes back to coaching.

        • Shticky says:

Cant trade the entire d corps and even if you could Randy has had enough pieces in and out of the line up and its had absolutely no effect…look at the past 2 games 6 given up to the preds Gardiner the scapegoat take him out put Ranger in after blaming Ranger (with good reason) give up 6 and blow a 3 goal lead to the Pens. This isnt even mentioning the shots which may be a little better if they could break out of their zone. The issue is becoming much more than just trade for a shut down type D man.
