Al Montoya backstops the Jets to a shutout win over the Devils.

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: Evander Kane scored twice and backup Al Montoya made 24 saves to blank the struggling New Jersey Devils 3-0.

OTTAWA SUN: The Senators gave up a team-record 56 shots falling to the Anaheim Ducks 4-1, making them winless in four straight games. Bobby Ryan scored the Senators only goal in his first game back in Anaheim since he was traded to Ottawa this summer.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Senators were among the league leaders in shots-against the past two seasons.  Could it be that problem is coming home to roost this season?

TORONTO STAR: James van Riemsdyk’s improvement this season is among the reason for the Maple Leafs best start in 20 years.

LA PRESSE: Montreal Canadiens captain Brian Gionta will rejoin the club in Winnipeg after missing the team’s last two games dealing with a family matter.

VANCOUVER SUN: Despite a recent three-game suspension, Canucks defenseman Alex Edler doesn’t intend to change his game.

CALGARY SUN: Youngsters Sven Baertschi and Sean Monahan have shown signs of chemistry in the Flames last two games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Baertschi was called out by Flames president of hockey operations Brian Burke for his poor pre-season performance.  Putting him with the promising Monahan could be just the jump start he needed.

EDMONTON SUN: Oilers sophomore winger Nail Yakupov wasn’t happy with being a healthy scratch in the Oilers loss on Saturday to the Maple Leafs.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’ll be interesting to see what effect this has on his performance when he returns to the lineup.

  1. WOW! How good did Evander Kane look last night ….FAST !!

Ottawa has to ride this out …nothing can be done about poor play… need to be more puck possessive and puck hungry!

Calgary …nice to see talent given a chance at a young age …the best thing to see in the NHL is a young kid make a team and show his raw talent ….good on Monohan !!!

Trade watch on Yakupov …Oilers have to many needs right now to just have him in the press box hes the best trade bait they have to plug the GIGANTIC holes they have especially in net !!

    • Really not liking the Ranger – Gardiner pairing on leafs D

  2. For a team that was 2nd only to Chicago in goals against last season, the Sens defense looks terrible.

They were completely outmatched and outplayed last night..

It’s a brutal road trip to start the season.. and the month ending home stand doesn’t get easier with Ana, SJ & the Blackhawks..

IF the Sens can somehow regroup and win in Phoenix tomorrow, they will be .500 for the road trip… I’ll take that.

    • Of the games I’ve seen them play so far this reg. season they’ve looked terrible. If it wasn’t for Lehner standing on his head, the past two games would have been absolute blowouts. Spezza’s issues have been well documented but to me Karlsson’s also isn’t playing the way he can (or used to). Still too early for panic however in the tough Atlantic conference no team can afford to fall too far behind.
