If the Leafs are showcasing Liles, it may just be to clear cap room so that they can re-sign Dion Phaneuf to what is expected to be a huge extension. This morning, Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos reported on Twitter that discussions between the Leafs and the captain have already began:

“Is #Leafs Phaneuf worth 50M over 7 yrs? I’m hearing bar has been set in talks and that’s where it starts. More on HC@ noon+ @Sportsnet 2nite”

Bottom line with Phaneuf it is the same thing as with Kessel who can they get for 7 million a year to bring what he brings to the team? No one because those guys don’t become available. If we were rebuilding we could get a boat load for him but trading would ruin our playoff chances.

Phaneuf will get a nice raise, hes a minute eating beast, not the smartest but hes worth 7 million a year.
