TORONTO SUN/CALGARY HERALD: Goaltender Jonathan Bernier helped his outplayed teammates steal two points, making 41 saves backstopping the Maple Leafs to a 4-2 win over the Calgary Flames. It marked the 12th time in fourteen games the Leafs have been out-shot this season, yet they have a 10-4 record thus far.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The upstart Flames dominated the Leafs for most of this game but Bernier was outstanding between the pipes for the Leafs.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: The apparently tired Canucks fell 2-1 to the Detroit Red Wings. Despite giving up a soft goal to Detroit’s Tomas Tatar, Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo was otherwise solid in goal, making 25 saves in a losing cause.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: Strong goaltending and shot-blocking are key to the Canadiens 8-5-0 start.

OTTAWA CITIZEN: Declining defense and goaltending are among the factors behind the Senators recent struggles.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Senators have lived dangerously in their own zone since 2011-12, ranking among the league leaders in shots-against. This season they’ve given up the most shots-against per game in the league.  Usually they could rely on their goaltending to bail them out, but it’s been off to an inconsistent start.

WINNIPEG SUN: Ted Wyman examines the good, the bad and the ugly for the Jets in October. Penalty-killing is among the good, their top-three defensemen (Dustin Byfuglien, Tobias Enstrom and Zach Bogosian) are among the bad, and their power-play is the ugly.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: The Oilers have placed defensemen Corey Potter and Denis Grebeshkov on waivers with the intent of demoting them.
