Jonathan Bernier looks forward to challenging James Reimer for starter’s role.

TORONTO STAR: Jonathan Bernier is savouring the opportunity to go head-to-head with James Reimer for the role of Maple Leafs starting goalie.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: If both play up to potential in jockeying for that starter’s job, it’ll only benefit the Leafs. On the other hand, whoever loses could find themselves the target of endless trade speculation throughout next season. There’s an assumption it’ll be Reimer who gets dealt if he fails to hold off Bernier’s challenge. If so, don’t expect him to be shopped immediately. The Leafs could hang onto him as a bargaining chip for the trade deadline.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: New Oilers center Boyd Gordon is excited about his new role as the club’s checking line center, hoping to bring some feistiness to the lineup.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Gordon could have some company in the feisty department. It’s believed GM Craig MacTavish wants to add more grit to his lineup before the season opens.

NHL.COM: The Calgary Flames are expecting big things this season from Sven Baertschi.

OTTAWA CITIZEN: The Senators have re-signed forward Stephane Da Costa to a one-year contract.
