TORONTO SUN: The Maple Leafs dropped a 3-2 shootout decision to the Philadelphia Flyers. James van Riemsdyk tallied one of the Leafs goals, while Luke Schenn was among the Flyers scorers.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Interesting that two guys traded for each other last year tallied for their respective teams.
VANCOUVER PROVINCE: Eddie Lack made his case as Roberto Luongo’s understudy, making 25 saves in 40 minutes of play as the Canucks fell 3-2 to the San Jose Sharks.
CALGARY HERALD: The Flames fell 4-2 to the Ottawa Senators in a fight-filled preseason tilt.
OTTAWA CITIZEN: Senators defenseman Jared Cowen is relieved to have his contract impasse behind him. Cowen received a warm welcome from this teammates when he rejoined them in Saskatoon on Monday.
MONTREAL GAZETTE: Boston Bruins goaltender Malcolm Subban got the better of his brother, Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban, as the Bruins downed the Habs 6-3.
WINNIPEG SUN: Jets goaltender Ondrej Pavelec failed to make the cut on ESPN’s top 25 NHL goaltenders. Jets coach Claude Noel acknowledge Pavelec needs to improve, but so does his teammates, particularly the defense.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: There’s been too many games over the past two years where Pavelec’s teammates left him hung out to dry. Their defensive game must improve as much as Pavelec’s goaltending if they’re to make the playoffs.
EDMONTON JOURNAL: The Oilers have begun contract extension talks with center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who enters the final season of his entry-level contract.
