NHL Canadian Corner – September 3, 2014

Updates on Bobby Ryan, Nail Yakupov, Daniel Winnik and Nikolaj Ehlers, plus the latest on the Canadiens, Canucks and Flames. 

OTTAWA SUN/OTTAWA CITIZEN: Bobby Ryan has returned to Ottawa for Senators’ training camp, healthy and ready for a larger leadership role. As for contract talks, Ryan expects they’ll pick up soon, and describes their early discussions as amicable.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It could cost the Senators $7 million per season on a long-term deal to re-sign Ryan.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: David Staples believes Nail Yakupov will generate more offense this season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Oilers certainly need more from Yakupov if they’re to improve in the standings this season.

NATIONAL POST: Daniel Winnik intends to bring a “hard-nosed, defense-first attitude” to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Winnik signed with the Leafs this summer as a free agent.

RDS.CA: The Montreal Canadiens have invited former Carolina Hurricanes winger Drayson Bowman to training camp on a tryout basis.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: That could put an end to rumors of the Canadiens inviting Dustin Penner to camp.

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: The Jets signed 2014 first-round pick Nikolaj Ehlers to a three-year entry-level contract.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: The Canucks have spared no expense when it comes to improving their front office staff.

SPORTSNET: Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving will soon begin evaluating the state of his club’s talent pipeline.

I went to some of the Frontenacs training camp last week and Treliving must be Treloving what he will be seeing in Sam Bennett, who looks faster and perhaps a little more filled out than last year(he looked like a stick to start the year last year has to be close to 190lbs if not more now) Looked great in drills and played hard in the final scrimmage game where he put up 3 goals and 2 assists, he honestly didnt look like he belonged on the same rink as the rest. Bennett will be a good one.
