NHL Canadian Corner – Tuesday, August 6, 2013.

Updates on Daniel Briere, Jared Cowen and Alexander Burmistrov.

LA PRESSE: Daniel Briere heard his first cheers wearing a Montreal Canadiens jersey during a friendly game of ball hockey between NHL and tennis players at the Rogers Cup.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Briere will continue to hear the cheers from the Habs faithful when this season begins, and will coninues to do so if he avoids injury and posts up decent numbers. If he continues to be a clutch playoff performer, he’s receive the same devotion as former Canadien Alex Kovalev.

Senators and Jared Cowen no closer to a new contract.

Senators and Jared Cowen no closer to a new contract.

OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports the Senators and defenseman Jared Cowen remain far apart in contract negotiations. It’s believed the Cowen camp seeks a deal similar to that of Travis Hamonic, who recently inked a seven-year, $27 million deal.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Cowen is coming off his entry-level contract which would’ve paid him $1.295 million per season in base salary and bonuses. I’m guessing the Senators want to ink the 22-year-old to a two-three year “bridge contract” worth between $2-$2.5 million per season.

NBC SPORTS PRO HOCKEY TALK: Alexander Burmistrov blamed Winnipeg Jets coach Claude Noel and teammate Olli Jokinen for his lack of playing time last season. He wondered why Jokinen continued to get top-six minutes despite playing poorly while he was buried in the lineup. Burmistrov opted to play in the KHL this season rather than re-sign with the Jets, though they continue to hold his NHL rights.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: That kind of public beefing doesn’t do Burmistrov any favors, but if he decides to return after this season to the Jets, they likely won’t hold it against him. Jokinen has only one season left on his contract and if the Jets don’t re-sign him, they could turn to Burmistrov, provided he and Noel put their issues behind them. Time will tell, of course.
