Dale Hunter out as Capitals head coach, Todd Richards hired by Blue Jackets. Read on for the details.

Hunter steps down as Capitals coach.

Various sources today report Dale Hunter has informed Washington Capitals GM George McPhee he’s stepping down as head coach, returning (as expected) to the OHL’s London Knights.

COLUMBUS DISPATCH: reports the Blue Jackets have decided to make interim head coach Todd Richards their new bench boss, signing him to a two year contract.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: This news from both clubs isn’t surprising. While Hunter loves coaching, it certainly appeared as though he preferred it in the OHL, while Richards was expected to be retained as the Jackets head coach. No word on Hunter’s replacement, as McPhee said he’ll take some time to find one.
