With the first round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft imminent, here’s the latest on Rick Nash, Roberto Luongo, Bobby Ryan, Tim Thomas, Jay Bouwmeester, PK Subban and more!
COLUMBUS DISPATCH: Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson said he’s not close to a trade for Rick Nash, but Howson seems almost excited about the possibility of moving his first round pick (second overall).
PHILLY.COM: The Philadelphia Flyers continue their pursuit of Nash, and are also in talks with the Anaheim Ducks regarding Bobby Ryan. It’s also highly unlikely the Flyers will target Predators RFA blueliner Shea Weber with an offer sheet on July 1.
SPORTSNET.CA: Mike Brophy believes it’s only a matter of time until the Vancouver Canucks ship Roberto Luongo to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
NEW YORK TIMES: Jeff Z. Klein speculates the NY Rangers could pursue Pittsburgh Penguins center Jordan Staal, though that appears a long shot and secondary to their pursuit of Rick Nash and Bobby Ryan.
CSNNE.COM: Joe Haggerty reports goaltender Tim Thomas agreed over a week ago to waive his “no-trade” clause, as a favor to the Bruins to help them clear salary. The clause was due to expire anyway on July 1. Thomas remains determined to sit out next season, meaning any team interested in acquiring his rights would be doing so to reach the salary cap floor for next season.
SPORTSNET.CA: Pat Steinberg reports the Calgary Flames have had trade talks regarding defenseman Jay Bouwmeester.
ESPN.COM: Pierre LeBrun reported a source saying Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle is “definitely in play”, but a team source said the club was only fielding calls, not shopping Yandle.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: So, Rick Nash could be traded, or not. Sounds more likely the Jackets could trade the second overall pick than move Nash tonight…Don’t expect Staal to be traded tonight…Last I heard regarding Ryan, Ducks are still listening to offers, but aren’t actively peddling him…Maybe Luongo gets dealt to Toronto, but I’m not holding my breath expecting it tonight, or this weekend…I expect Thomas’ rights could be dealt after July 1, as teams which might wish to reach cap floor will likely want to sign/acquire actual players who’ll take to the ice for them next season first…Bouwmeester could move, maybe to one of those teams which might need to reach the cap floor…The Subban story only broke this afternoon. Everything I’d heard prior to that indicated the Habs weren’t moving him. We’ll have to wait and see if this actually takes place, though if the Canadiens do trade him, they’d better get a sweet return, or Habs fans will go ballistic…As for Yandle, it’ll take a scoring forward to pry him out of Phoenix.
