NHL Evening Rumor Mill – June 25, 2014

The latest on Jason Spezza, Ryan Miller, Dan Boyle, Dave Bolland, Milan Michalek, Josh Bailey and more.

TSN.CA’s Bob McKenzie reports via Twitter: “Jason Spezza trade talk heating up. OTT in conversation with 4 teams, three in the West and one in the East.”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I’m guessing Anaheim, St. Louis and Dallas are among those Western teams. As for the Eastern clubs, we know the Columbus Blue Jackets, Florida Panthers and New York Islanders are reportedly on Spezza’s “no-trade” list, while Senators GM Bryan Murray has no intention of trading Spezza to Montreal or Toronto.

Will Ryan Kesler or Jason Spezza be dealt by this weekend?

Will Ryan Kesler or Jason Spezza be dealt by this weekend?

ESPN.COM: Craig Custance reports there could be little trade activity until the Jason Spezza and Ryan Kesler situations are sorted out. The Anaheim Ducks are believed interested in acquiring one of them…The Joe Thornton trade chatter is dying down. It appears unlikely he or Patrick Marleau will be dealt…

Pierre LeBrun reports a “good deal of interest” in pending UFA Dan Boyle, whose rights the NY Islanders are reportedly shopping. Sources confirm Toronto, Detroit and the NY Rangers are them…The St. Louis Blues are among the teams reaching out to Colorado Avalanche center Paul Stastny…The Florida Panthers aren’t close to moving the first overall pick but continue to entertain offers…Talks are ongoing between the Canadiens and Brian Gionta.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Spezza or Kesler could be moved on Friday, the opening day of the draft…Thornton and Marleau are staying put. They won’t waive their no-movement clauses…It’ll be interesting to see if a team will try to acquire Boyle’s rights…The Blues are also among the clubs thought to have interest in Spezza and Kesler.

SPORTSNET.CA: Mike Johnston cites reports claiming the Vancouver Canucks have reached out to Toronto center Dave Bolland and pending UFA goalie Ryan Miller.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Doesn’t mean the Canucks will get either guy but it is worth noting they’re looking into those options. Bolland could become a replacement for Kesler if they trade him in the coming days. Miller would provide experience between the pipes, but is he willing to join a Canadian team? He might not have much choice as there aren’t many clubs seeking a starting goalie.

CBS NEW YORK: cites a report by TSN’s Darren Dreger claiming the NY Islanders could be testing Josh Bailey’s trade value.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Package him with the fifth-overall pick and there could be considerable interest. They could try to use that to either add a left-wing sniper for their first line or a top-four defenseman.

OTTAWA CITIZEN: Wayne Scanlan reports Senators winger Milan Michalek is exploring the free agent interview period to gauge interest from rival clubs. He hasn’t ruled out re-signing with the Senators.

  1. I thought more teams would get into the mix for Spezza but I got a little worried of a 2 team scuffle rather than a multi-team battle. I think they can get a decent return especially if they do something like Columbus did with Nash and package other assets with him. I could see BMGM doing that to really get the guy or guy’s he wants. And the Thornton rumours dying it helps as well. Michalek wants to talk to other teams eh? NO! lol I know players have come back to their teams when they’ve done that but I just get the feeling he won’t be back. Hopefully the Spezza package can offset losing Michalek if he goes. Sounds like plenty of movement with a ton of teams. Should be hearing that famous Bettman saying more than usual! ‘I have a trade to announce’, inbetween the crowd booing him..

    • Other than Paul Stastny, the free agent class is pretty weak, so i see more deals as usual. Hopefully it should be pretty exciting

      • Same here Jason. Hopefully it is an exciting draft weekend. Hopefully no stupid trades for anybody;).

        • moulson can be best deal if money is right

  2. It’s funny how much of a drop it is from what the first pick to the 5th pick is worth. Florida wants a boat load and the isles are hoping to get a top player… Seems like quite the drop.

  3. Boyle replacing Stralman makes sense. Rangers still need a PP QB

  4. I see Miller possibly heading to Anaheim. It’s already been announced the Hiller won’t be re-signed, and it may be too soon to throw their young guys into full time duty. They could sign Miller to a one or two year deal and have him split time with Anderson or Gibson.

    • I see him in Minny, San Jose or Anaheim.

      • The Wild have lots of interest in Hiller, Vanek, Stastny and Niskanen. If Vanek will sign a shorter term deal for reasonable $$, the Wild will try to get Nisky too. If not, they would offer Stastny whatever it takes to entice him to sign. We are shopping Backstrom with hopes of finding a taker, (good luck with that I know!) and sign Hiller, so we have Hiller/Harding, Kemps go back to Iowa. All speculation and rumor of course!

  5. To Bruins;
    5th overall pick
    Josh Bailey

    To Islanders;
    Loui Eriksson
    Johnny Boychuk

Creates over 4 mil in cap space to use towards Iginla and Smith. Gives Islanders veteran winger and d.

    • That actually isn’t a bad deal at all. Guess the question is, do you give up Dal Colle & Bailey for Eriksson & Boychuk? If you are in win now mode it might not be a bad idea. The question you ask now, are the Islanders on Boychuck’s 15 team trade list and if not would he waive to go? Think more likely that Bruins will try and move Chris Kelly.

    • i would not give up boychuk or eriksson.i would give them chris kelly and adam mcquaid for 3rd and 4th round draft picks, still clears over 4 mill in cap room.

      • why would the islanders trade the #5 pick for a 3rd liner and (barely) a 3rd pairing Dman?? you have to give to get man…..the original offer for loui and Boychuk makes a lot more sense…..its the 5Th pick not the 55th pick man.

    • That’s a real good deal for both teams bruinnyandthejets.

Shawn I don’t think the Isles would want to add Kelly. McQuiad for sure though.

    • isles getting ripped off

    • I will piggyback off of that idea and suggest something similar

      To Pens
      5th overall pick
      Josh Bailey

      To Islanders
      James Neal
      Rob Scuderi

Yeah I know the Boston trade is better overall but Both Neal and Scuderi are locked up long term and Neal is a better finsher than Eriksson.

Pens get younger and 5 mill in cap space.

  6. I really hope that Spezza is moved by Friday. Part of this package needs to be a 1st round pick IMO and the longer he (and Kesler) are not moved, the more of a distraction it will be at the draft.

    • Exactly JJB. Kind of like the Miller situation that took almost two seasons to sort out.

  7. If Johnny gets traded I think he will end up in Edmonton with Kelly. Not sure what comes back maybe the kid or third overall.

    • agree, I have been saying that for a few days now. If Boychuk is available I believe MacT will go after him hard.

  8. I’d like to see Anderson included in any deal with Spezza. He really isn’t in the long term plan and is UFA next year. Back to Collorado where they know what they’re getting. We’ve all heard the names in play from that city.

Pick up Brodeur to help The Lehner along.

Also there appear to be 2 lists in play from Jason. The one he provided at the beginning of last season (just in case) that included all of the other Canadian teams, and a new one just received. Also, he can and would likely wave his NMC if Murray approached. He just wants to be gone.

And if I was Bryan Murray I’d be after team’s 2015 pick not this years.
