NHL Evening Rumor Mill – June 29, 2013.

Updates on Tyler Seguin, Vincent Lecavalier, Daniel Briere, Evgeni Nabokov and more.

CSNNE.COM: Joe Haggarty reports the Boston Bruins are listening to offers for Tyler Seguin but it would take a “king’s ransom” (including a top ten first round pick & an All-Star level roster player) to get him. Normally the Bruins wouldn’t consider moving a promising young player like Seguin but they have to clear roster space to re-sign Tuukka Rask and Patrice Bergeron. Haggarty also reports some teams have expressed interest in acquiring Andrew Ference’s negotiating rights. Ference is a UFA and won’t be re-signed by the Bruins.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Bruins don’t intend to use compliance buyouts to free up cap space, and evidently they’re not getting much interest in Rich Peverley if they’re listening to offers for Seguin.

Oilers, Flames interested in Braydon Coburn.

Oilers, Flames interested in Braydon Coburn.

CSNPHILLY.COM: Tim Panaccio reports finding a goaltender remains a priority for the Philadelphia Flyers, particularly one who has only a year left on his contract. The Flyers have been linked to St. Louis’ Jaroslav Halak and Buffalo’s Ryan Miller.  The Flyers also spoke to the NY Islanders about pending UFA blueliner Evgeni Nabokov. Flyers defenseman Braydon Coburn has been linked to the Edmonton Oilers. It’s believed the Flyers aren’t targeting the Oilers first round pick (7th overall) but their two second round picks. The Calgary Flames offered their sixth overall pick to the Flyers for Coburn, Matt Read and the Flyers first round pick (11th overall)  but that was an excessive amount to ask. The Flyers are also reportedly “quite keen” on Vincent Lecavalier.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Earlier today Sabres GM Darcy Regier said he doesn’t expect Miller or Thomas Vanek to be moved this weekend. Doesn’t mean it can’t happen, but Miller’s name hasn’t been in play very much today. Can’t blame the Flames for trying to pry Coburn and Read away with the sixth overall, but that really was asking too much from the Flyers. One or the other plus the Flyers first rounder, maybe. Not Read and Coburn plus their pick.

MIAMI HERALD: George Richards reports the Florida Panthers are interested in Vincent Lecavalier.

TSN’S Ryan Rishaug reports via Twitter “Sources tell TSN Lecavalier camp has met with Dallas, St. Louis, Philly and Montreal with more to come tonite.”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Welcome to this week’s new fun NHL game show, “Everybody Love Vincent”.

NBC SPORTS PRO HOCKEY TALK: Ryan Dadoun cites a report via NHL.com in which Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ray Shero claims he’s still attempting to re-sign Kris Letang, who recently spurned an eight-year, $56 million contract offer.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: If Letang isn’t willing to come down from his rumored $7.5-$7.75 million per season asking price, he’s a goner.

NEWSOBSERVER.COM: Chip Alexander reports Carolina Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford claims he’s received plenty of interest in his first round pick (5th overall) in tomorrow’s NHL Draft. The Hurricanes are in the trade market for a top-four defenseman.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Well, hello there, Philadelphia Flyers and Braydon Coburn.

ESPN.COM’S Craig Custance believes “a good 15 teams” could be interested in Daniel Briere, while Katie Strang reports Evgeni Nabokov has told the NY Islanders he intends to test the UFA market.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I expect a number of teams who lose out in the Lecavalier sweepstakes will take a run at landing Lecavalier. As for Nabokov, well, there’s always the Flyers, right? Everyone’s favorite goaltending laughingstock. What, too harsh? Sadly, it’s been that way since the early 1990s. Prove me wrong, Flyers fans. Prove me wrong.

  1. The leafs are still in the nhl right? Haven’t heard a single thing today.. Somethings up

    • A nice break indeed…

  2. Riddle me this how is an all star roster player cheaper then Seguin? How is that making cap room?

    • Agree Shticky. First of all, who is going to trade an all star roster player for Seguin who has yet to prove he is an all star himself. He has lots of upside and skill to be sure, but still is an unknown in terms of the finished product. Would you trade Patrick Kane for Seguin? LOL. It would take Seguin + + to land Kane. That’s what an all star player is. Good luck with your king’s ransom for him Boston. More like fools gold and bet he stays put.

      • Shticky I agree with you… why would you give up an all star caliber player and the top 10 pick for a player who has never reached 30 goals… Although I think Seguin will be better in a couple years but he won’t be that much better IMO.

        • Thought the exact same thing when I read that. How is seguin going to get more then a straight up trade for an equal player like JVR for L Schenn

          • He could fetch St. Louis and the 3rd pick. Add in rights to ference or something, or a prospect. Problem with sequins cap is it goes on. He has proven himself. He will continue to get better. If he wasn’t in juliens system he would have more impressive numbers. You hope drouin will be the guy to play with stamkos for the next decade. St. Louis only has a couple years left. Who knows… Maybe he is waiting for feaster to offer his next 5 first rounders. I’d like to see the bruins give seguin one more year… I think the yzerman factor is interesting…

          • What I meant was you hope drouin could be like seguin in a couple years. Seguin is only 21

          • I wonder if it’s same issue as Kessel in Boston, Perhaps too much pride in his own ability. Boston is a very team oriented place, stars like Bergeron, Lucic, Chara are a lot quieter about being “All-Star” players and more focused on winning. Perhaps seguin has a ego?

          • Wow Bis you think Seguin and the rights to Ferrence are getting the 3rd pick and St. Louis 3? days after Steve bought out Vinny? That would be the Last move in his career as gm of the lightning. Also explain how this helps the cap situation? it saves the Bruins 100k or about 1 season of hockey sticks.

    • Without even taking Seguins abilities or up side into account he makes 5.75 against the cap (rather steep for him but…) look at what all star type forwards make average you are probably looking at 5.5 and up sooo if you are looking for something guy that is an all star type player you are looking at probably paying more then what you are paying Seguin.

Then there is the argument involving Seguins production vs the next 5 years of his deal, but with out even getting in to that the statement we are looking for an all star type roster player plus a pick to save us money on the cap makes no sense, how bout a really good prospect and a pick or a top 9 type plus a prospect and a pick these would all make a bunch more sense then I want an all star plus for this kid that I don’t think is going to work out for us but still could be pretty good that we signed to a big deal.

  3. If the Canes could get Coburn, Flyers 1st, and another small piece, 3rd roubd or depth player they should gofor it. The 11th I still a great pick and they need the help on D.

  4. @Well, hello there, Philadelphia Flyers and Braydon Coburn.
Forget that. I’ll give you Phaneuf for the chance to draft the franchise center the Leafs are missing at #5.
    One of Barkov/Lindholm/Monahan.
Better deal and defenseman for the Canes.
    Coburn with a nice 5 points -10.
    Phaneuf with 28 points -4.
Phaneuf does all the things Coburn does and more.
I’m sure Carolina would see it that way also.

    • I’m not understanding all the coburn hoopla either. He’s not that good. Yes bes big and physical but look at his stats. There are plenty of other dmen better or equal at better value.

      • i know i don’t understand it either…

fyi barkov will not slip to beyond 4

    • I agree Phaneuf is a better defenseman, but doesn’t he have an expensive, long contract, Canes will pass because of the dollars.

      • Neither does Dion 1 year left on his deal… Granted its 6.5 mill but no term

  5. This isn’t turning out as I thought. With the draft being on one day and with UFA signings only 4 days later and because this draft is so darn deep I was thinking that someone would jump the gun today and try and ace the rest out and then cause a domino effect tomorrow, sure hope this draft doesn’t turn out to be a dud.

    • Starting to look that way but still a few days till UFA starts it should pick up. (at this rate that shouldn’t be to hard to up the pace)

      • ususally pretty slow until the picking starts…

hopefully some exciting stuff happens tomorrow…

darcy you better be on your A game… and by that i don’t mean just sitting on your ass as you do year after year….

  6. How about a three way deal

    Seguin to Canucks
    Schnieder to Philly
    ???? to Boston from Philly

    • Well Boston GM did say that he wants to get back into First round but Philly’s #11 is not enough + Couturier ?

    • Simmonds and the pick maybe.
I’m a Bruins fan and believe his production is down due to Claud’s defensive system and he was taken off the Bergeron,Marchand line.
I would do Eberle and their #7 pick. I love Eberle. I know Edmonton would love Seguin.

      • thats waaaaaay to much for seguin…. however Mactavish has never been gm before so he could pull off a bonehead move

      • Eberle has had more goals and points then Seguin in the last 2 seasons combined why would Edmonton basically just throw in the 7th pick overall for no reason? Makes no sense…

  7. Prove you wrong. Cechmanek spent 3 seasons with the Flyers, Finishing
    1st in NHL 2.01GAA (2000-01)
    2nd in NHL 2.05 GAA (2001-02)
    2nd in NHL 1.83 GAA (2002-03)

So basically Cechmanek was the best goalie in the NHL over 3 years with the FLyers. Go look at his save percentage also among league leaders. He had better stats then Hasek still on the Sabres at that time.

    • And he was so great, the Flyers traded him after the 2002-03 season to the LA Kings for a second round pick. Nice try. Next!!

      • LoL Roman Cechmanek with out a doubt some of the softest goals Ive ever seen, and him flipping out at center ice in the playoffs? One of the funniest things Ive seen in the playoffs again a classic!

      • And to add to that, he spent one sub-.500 season with the Kings and was never spotted in the NHL again.

    • ..and he has the most epic playoff collapses in NHL history…

  8. It’s the big day! Here’s hoping it’s a busy one

  9. Boston
Vanek Veteran sniper and natural RW which is need for B’s. Cap hit of 3 – 3.5 mil/ The rest to be covered by Sabres for last year of contract.
    1st Round #16
Seguin Natural C and fills Top 2 Center need for Buff.

that sounds pretty good for all I would think. Also smart way to get cap relief for Boston and top 2 center for Buffalo.

  10. Luongo is hilarious

    Freedman tweets

just arrived in NJ and everything is nuts it seems like everyone is being traded

    Lou responds

    Except for…..

  11. I love Roberto Luongo – long may he tweet. Tyler Seguin would likely bloom as an offensive player in a different setting but please don’t compare him at this stage to Jordan Eberle.
Hoping today lives up to the advance billing – should be fun.

  12. I don’t think Lou’s contract is a toxic as many GM’s believe. A lot of them just don’t like Gillis from his player/agent days. Lou is an excellent player, a team first guy, and funny as all heck on twitter. Most
GM’s would love a guy that could mentor their next goaltending prospect like Lou did with Cory
Schneider, and Schneider has even said Lou has taught him a lot about technique, and being a

    • For 4 or maybe 5 years the contract still has 7on it and if he has to call it a career at or around 38 like most do, that contract really stings for another 3years or so.
