NHL Evening Rumor Mill – March 3, 2014

The latest on Jason Spezza, Martin Brodeur, Ryan Kesler, Marian Gaborik, Ryan Callahan, Christian Ehrhoff and more.

ESPN.COM: Pierre LeBrun reports Martin Brodeur or Jaroslav Halak could provide some assurances in goal for the Minnesota Wild. So far, there’s no indication the Devils could move Brodeur. Other affordable options for the Wild could include Anaheim’s Viktor Fasth, Florida’s Tim Thomas, Edmonton’s Ilya Bryzgalov and Carolina’s Justin Peters…Sources claims Ryan Callahan has “softened” his contract demands from seven years to six. He still wants around $6.5 million, while the Rangers might prefer $6 million per. LeBrun also reports Dallas Stars GM Jim Nill is “open for business” but isn’t rushing to move a body for a draft pick…The Blackhawks are likely to stand pat at the deadline…The Detroit Red Wings are believed among the clubs pursuing Buffalo’s Christian Ehrhoff. $22 million of his $4o million contract will be paid out by the end of this season…Still no word on further developments in Chris Phillips’ contract talks with the Senators.

Are the Senators shopping Jason Spezza?

Are the Senators shopping Jason Spezza?

SPORTSNET.CA: Mark Spector suspects Ryan Kesler won’t be the only Canucks core player to move on. He noted Detroit likes defenseman Alex Edler, and suspects the NY Rangers could pursue Alex Burrows at the draft if they should trade away Ryan Callahan. The Penguins appear the front runners for Kesler…The Blackhawks limited cap space means they’ll likely stand pat at the trade deadline…He doubts the Maple Leafs get into the bidding for Kesler…The Senators are still interested in Chris Stewart, recently dealt from St. Louis to Buffalo…The Rangers could have interest in Edmonton’s Ales Hemsky if they can get him for a third-round pick…With so many teams seeking defense, Spector wonders if Winnipeg might move Dustin Byfuglien…He believes the Flames will move Mike Cammalleri and sees Matt Moulson as a fit with the LA Kings.

TSN.CA: Darren Dreger claims sources say the Ottawa Senators are quietly gauging interest around the league in Jason Spezza.

OTTAWA CITIZEN: Senators GM Bryan Murray denied reports he’s shopping Spezza.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Back to you, Darren! Spezza’s agent also said his client hasn’t been asked to provide a list of preferred trade destinations.

COLUMBUS DISPATCH: Aaron Portzline looks at possible moves for the Blue Jackets, including pursuit of a stabilizing veteran defenseman (Christian Ehrhoff?) plus some “size, snarl” at forward. He also speculates the Jackets could hang onto Marian Gaborik up to the trade deadline to see if he’ll generate a decent return. If not, they’ll hang onto him for the rest of the season. They could also move forward Cam Atkinson if they land a top commodity. Portzline believes the Jackets wish to swap bodies, not add them.

  1. I wonder what it would take for the Jets to get Spezza, without giving up Trouba or Scheifele of course. I wonder if Ottawa would take Jokinen, Byfuglien and a pick and/or prospect for Spezza and Mark Stone.

    • Just read somewhere that Spezza has some sort of ntc and Sens haven’t spoken to his agent regarding this shopping…

      • I’m not even a Senators or Spezza fan but I’m pretty sure your package wouldn’t net Spezza alone, let alone throwing in Stone.

  2. spezza michalek and a 1st to islanders for taveres and a 2nd

    • Sure. If by a 1st you mean Ottawa’s 1st for the next ten years.

      • what about
NYI send Vanek and Frans Neilsen to OTT for Spezza?
OTT can trade or sign Vanek and get a solid #2 behind Turris who clearly is their #1 now

    • How about 10 signed pucks by taveres and a game worn jersey signed (team canada) and murry can send spezza there sell the gear and retire maybe NYI give them a 2end just to make it a hockey deal !!! how about a new coach in toronto that would be nice get this bum off our bench!!!!!!

    • Wow that’s bad man. Lol funny guy.

      • might seem bad, but it would be a steal considering the sentiment among the fan base here in Ottawa. If there is a Sens fan who doesn’t want Spezza gone at any cost, then I’ve not found them.

  3. gives the islanders a chance to make playoffs and gives ottawa a solid player plus it finally gives taveres a good team to play on

    • wow, this such an awful trade proposal. Ottawa doesn’t have a first this year either.

    • Finally gives Tavares a good team to play on? Ottawa’s that team lol?

      • Cause Ottawa is so much better than the Islanders

  4. remember that kid on your hockey team that didn’t no how to come in past the blue line? he was always scared of getting hit. but he scored lots of goals and everyone thought he was great because he could put up point but everyone on your team new he was useless other then on the power play. today in Toronto we have such a player. his name is Phil kessel lots of point yes great but u cant get 4 goals every game defense wins hockey games he should be traded back to a US team where they have no clue what hockey really is and his style of play fits there is no way Toronto will ever win a cup with that guy on our team. so whats that at lest another 7 years good luck nonis

    • Nothing to do with the topic. Just stop.

      • this was a new topic to see if anyone shared my thoughts. and the jt trade was just said because there is no way in hell the NYI will trade jt. he a top 5 player in the nhl and will be for the next 10 years prob. NYI need to build around him. they tryed with vanek but that was a bust they were better off with moulson and now its going to cost them unless they can get a good return for vanek somewhere else. BUF will be look to get a top 5 pick with NYI first round this year. jt is out for the season expect a big drop from the nyi from here on out. and as for spezza he an’t going anywhere. the vanek trade go me thinking about how bad the kessel trade was and i thought i would comment on it.

  5. Columbus wants a player with size and snarl. In other words, they want Kesler. He might be a nice fit there. Columbus has some nice pieces in place and is heading in the right direction. Kesler might vault them solidly into a playoff position.

  6. Kessler for Malkin thats what it will take penguins not those slakers weve heard about mybe we will give you burrows and we will take a slacker

    • Are you nuts????? Kesler is not enough to get Malkin…a few years ago maybe, but now…no way. Shero would just hang up to stunned to speak after hearing that proposal.

  7. Flyers will be in on Kesler. Couturier, Grossman (allows Canucks to move Bieska or Edler for more cap relief), Raffl and a #1 pick.

    • Couturier is not going anywhere, unless Homgren is even dumber than I already think he is. Coutuurier is actually close to as good defensively as Kesler, younger, cheaper and still has offensive upside. His offensive stats actually look a lot like Kesler’s first couple of seasons, and Kesler was several years older.
If I’m Philly I wouldn’t trade Couturier for Kesler straight up.

    • Ummm yeah, gee, maybe the Flyers will throw in Voracek and Giroux too. Where do yuou guys come up with these deals?

  8. I think the pens get kesler and either moulson or stewart. might take some cap magic but the pens have proved they get what they want. I just hope this time shero doesn’t give up to much to get what he wants. as a side note oli maatta is a stud within the next 5 yrs he will be one of the top 10 defensemen in the league.

    • i like the idea of moulson on the pens i think he would be a better fit then Kesler to fill the void. Sutter has bin attached to the kesler deal and i think his role on the pens is well played and a good peace they shouldn’t move. they should be able to get moulson for picks or a pick and prospect. good post

  9. oh yea, malkin for kesler? keslers good but do you ever watch hockey or just come on here and say silly stuff?
