NHL Evening Rumor Mill – March 4, 2014.

On the eve of the trade deadline, check out the latest on Ryan Kesler, Thomas Vanek, Christian Ehrhoff, Paul Stastny, Dmitry Kulikov and more.

ESPN.COM: Pierre LeBrun earlier today reported the NY Rangers are keeping an eye on the Ryan Kesler situation in Vancouver, speculating they could make a pitch if unable to re-sign Ryan Callahan. The Red Wings aren’t believed to have interest in Kesler. It’s believed they’re more interested in landing a top-four defenseman. There was talk of their having interest in Buffalo’s Christian Ehrhoff but not at the Sabres’ sticker price. LeBrun also reported the Avalanche might not be players in the rental market. He wonders if they might consider moving Paul Statsny for a top-four defenseman. They won’t shop Ryan O’Reilly.

CBC.CA: Elliotte Friedman earlier today reports he believes there’s serious interest among Cup contenders in Ryan Kesler. The Canucks apparently don’t want to ship him to a Western Conference club. The Blackhawks aren’t pursuing Kesler. The Flyers, Penguins and Rangers are believed the most interested in him…A source told Friedman the Devils aren’t trading Jaromir Jagr…Cam Ward’s agent and the Hurricanes management denies the goalie wants out of Carolina…Friedman’s not so certain Chris Stewart could end up in Ottawa…Kings GM Dean Lombardi doesn’t like playoff rentals but Friedman suspect he could add Marian Gaborik or Matt Moulson if it’s possible to re-sign them.

SPORTSNET: Luke Fox reports NY Times’ hockey columnist Chris Botta believes the Penguins and Kings are most interested in Thomas Vanek. The Anaheim Ducks could also be gunning for him after clearing cap space by trading Dustin Penner and Viktor Fasth.

DENVER POST: Adrian Dater reports Colorado Avalanche center Paul Stastny said he hasn’t spoken with his agent in the past 24 hours and has nothing new to report on his contract talks. He admits he’s willing to accept a discount to re-sign with the Avalanche.

CSNPHILLY.COM: Tim Panaccio reports the Flyers acquisition of Andrew MacDonald today means it’s more likely they’ll shop Andrej Meszaros before tomorrow’s trade deadline.

TSN’s Darren Dreger reports via Twitter the Florida Panthers aren’t moving defenseman Dmitry Kulikov.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Not much to comment on tonight as we’ve been over most of this before. I will note the Ducks moving out Penner as well as Fasth could mean they’re seeking a proven scorer. We’ll see if it’s Vanek, Moulson, Gaborik or someone else.

  1. If the Ducks do try and get a power forward I believe it may be Gaborik. Cheaper to get than
Vanek or Moulson plus easier to sign for next season than Vanek or Moulson. Gaborik might
look real good next to Getzlaf & Perry.

  2. I think the Sharks are looking hard at Moulson. He’s a battler and a scorer, and he’s consistent. If they can get him to commit to resigning with them, I think that he’s worth a first. With Hertl out and Havlat just too fragile to count on for anything big, Moulson is a good choice, and someone who would appeal to Doug Wilson’s hockey sense…..Even though the Sharks have no real big names on D, with Boyle having an off year, they are still doing fine in the goals against category, and need an additional forward more than D.

    • The Sabres have given Moulson permission to talk to other teams.

    • I heard Sharks were looking at Stewart and Stafford.

      • Minni is also looking at Stewart and Stafford. We have players to deal but unfortunately they are considered garbage. Heatley, Mitchell, Brodziak, Proesser. Some young prospects include, Fontaine, Zucker, Bulmer.

  3. Bruins should go for Kesler perfect for their type of play. Would be a third line center though.
Spooner,Subban and 1st. Young center, top goalie and pick.

  4. Moulson is an average player unless he plays with a true #! center
