NHL Free Agent News – Wednesday, September 7, 2011.

The latest on Kyle Turris, Marty Turco, Alexei Yashin, Luke Schenn, Teemu Selanne, Victor Oreshkovich, Fernando Pisani and Chris Campoli.

ESPN.COM/ARIZONA REPUBLIC: reports center Kyle Turris appears to be pricing himself out of the Phoenix Coyotes market. ESPN’s Scott Burnside cited sources claiming Turris was seeking either a three-year deal worth just above $4 million annually, or a two year deal worth just over $3 million. GM Don Maloney said there’s been no movement in contract talks, while Turris’ agent said there was still plenty of time to get a deal done.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Turris had 25 points last season and 20 the season before that. No way in hell he gets that much money, from the Coyotes or anyone else. If he stages a holdout, he’ll only be hurting himself. Don’t be surprised if his name starts popping up in trade rumors if he’s unsigned through training camp.

ESPN.COM/CHICAGO DAILY HERALD: reported on the status of two former Blackhawks. ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reported goalie Marty Turco hasn’t signed with a team yet but isn’t ready to consider retirement. Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald meanwhile reports defenseman Chris Campoli also remains unsigned, despite the Ottawa Sun reporting a couple of weeks ago five clubs were interested in him.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Campoli will eventually be signed to a contract with someone. Turco, on the other hand, is likely headed toward the broadcast booth.

TSN.CA: reports Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke declined to comment on details of his contract negotiations with defenseman Luke Schenn, but remained optimistic of getting something done prior to training camp.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: As they say in the Canadian Army, “SITREP. NO CHANGE”.

LOS ANGELES TIMES: Helene Elliott reports Anaheim Ducks GM Bob Murray said winger Teemu Selanne remains determined to return with the club this season, but is still waiting for his surgically repaired knee to get stronger.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Sounds like this could take a little longer than expected, but I think we’ll see Selanne with the Ducks this season.

VANCOUVER SUN: Ian Walker reports the Canucks are closing in on a one-year deal with forward Victor Oreshkovich, whose agent believes an agreement should be reached in the coming days.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: No word on dollars but that could come in between $600-$800K.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Jim Matheson reports former Oilers forward Fernando Pisani remains unsigned, and isn’t ruling out the possibility of signing with a European team.

NEWSDAY: Katie Strang reports former Islanders center Alexei Yashin has not yet signed with a KHL team, and a reunion with the Islanders appears slim, with one source saying the chances of Yashin re-signing with the club are unlikely.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: What’s that sudden breeze? Oh, it’s thousands of Islanders fans heaving a collective sigh of relief….

  1. Canadian Army?

    • Yes, Canadian Army, that’s what it’s now called, rather than Land Forces Command.

  2. Sad news from the KHL. Several former NHLers killed including Demitra. Ironically the Kings’ home opener will be against the Blues. That will be a somber game.

  3. Turris wants 4 million?!?!?!??? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Wow, what’s he all about eh? If that’s true, than he really is showing his character on that one.

  4. wow….turris needs a new brain…that gust of wind you referred to?….was a collective gasp of disgust,as yashin was spotted practicing with the islanders team….

  5. Turris is trying to go the same route as JVR and get a deal based on potential. He should not get over $1.5 a year.

  6. I heard that Yashin was practicing with the team (Islanders) on the ice ? there was a post on TSN yesterday. Is that wrong ?

  7. Is it possible someoen mis heard and Turis is asking for either 4 mill over three or 3 mill over two? Sounds much more resonable to me…..

  8. Habsfan1: That’s what I thought when I first read it, too. I re-read it several times to make sure I got it right. The article goes into detail that Turris’ requests would put him in van Riemsdyk country, so I guess there’s no mistaking the amounts.

Cowtown75: Yashin was practicing at the Isles practice facility, but that’s not unusual, as it’s apparently open to former Islanders, especially those tight with the team owner.

  9. @ Habsfan1 & @Lyle Richardson

Turris for $4mil/yr just sounds so wrong. I think that someone interpreted it wrong before it got to rumour. $3-4mil over 2 years sounds so much more plausible.

  10. “Turris had 25 points last season and 20 the season before that. No way in hell he gets that much money, from the Coyotes or anyone else. If he stages a holdout, he’ll only be hurting himself. ”

Unless the plan is to try and force Phoenix to move him.
