NHL Free Agent Updates – March 2, 2012.

Should the Edmonton Oilers pitch an offer sheet this summer to Canucks goalie Cory Schneider?…Can Wojtek Wolski stick with the Panthers? How close is a new contract for Maple Leafs center Mikhail Grabovski?…Can Stephane Veilleux play his way to a new contract with the Wild this summer? Read on to find out!

Should Oilers pitch an offer sheet this summer to Schneider?

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Jonathan Willis wonders if pitching an offer sheet to Vancouver Canucks RFA goalie Cory Schneider this summer makes sense for the Oilers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Willis ultimately doubts Oilers management will go that route. For all we know, Schneider might not even be a Canucks by July 1st, let alone still be an RFA by then.

SPORTSNET 590’s Greg Brady yesterday tweeted he was hearing a new contract for Maple Leafs center Mikhail Grabovski “VERY likely to be done by end of March.”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: That’ll certainly alleviate worried Leaf fans who fear Grabovski could be lost to free agency for nothing. Still, we’ll have to wait and see what happens for now.

SUN-SENTINEL.COM: Harvey Fialkov recently reported new Panthers forward Wojtek Wolski, acquired before the trade deadline from the NY Rangers, is hoping to make the most of this opportunity to earn a new contract with the club.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Wolski has played for four teams in two years, and his stock has been in significant decline. He’ll need to really step up his performance over the remainder of the season to convince Panthers management to take a chance on him. Even then, I daresay it’ll only be a one-year deal.

STARTRIBUNE.COM: Kent Youngblood recently reported forward Stephane Veilleux, back for his second go-around with the Minnesota Wild, is hoping to earn a contract which keeps him with the team beyond this season.

  1. If the Oil make a pitch for Schnider (which they should) it’s going to take Magnus Paajarvi and a second solid prospect or first/second rounder to make it happen.

  2. Just to be clear (we went over this last year with Stamkos) if the Oil offersheet Schneider (I’m not saying they will) it will be for 2013 draft picks…NOT this years draft. I just wanted to clear that up for future posters.

  3. @ bigboss – A Group II offer sheet would cost the Oilers draft picks, which they have in spades, not a player or prospect.

I could see Wolski sticking in Florida with Dineen coaching him. The Panthers organization has done good work with guys like Versteeg and Fleischmann, not to mention adding Huberdeau for next season if he’s ready.

Veilleux is literally a dime-a-dozen player in the NHL. With Granlund and Coyle in the system, I think the Wild would rather see what they have to offer at the big league level rather than spending time on Veilleux.

I strongly believe Grabovski will sign for somewhere between $4.5 – $5.5M per year for 5 years in Toronto. If he can become more consistent, Grabo could be a key player for the Leafs as he provides plenty of secondary offensive support to guys like Kessel and Lupul, while not being a defensive liability.

  4. i don’t think schneider will make it to rfa. i think if he moves it will be via trade at the draft.

  5. @ Durt: I agree 100%. But…… Scott Howsen has a history of trading away top picks in the current draft… so who knows. If it isan offer sheet, then you are right it is for the following seasons.

I highly doubt vancouver trades Schneider to a divsiional rival.

Backup golaies (or 2nd goalies don’t actualy get traded for very much (unless you are JFJ Jr.)
    Toskala: 1st, 2nd, 4th
    Kipursoff: 2nd pick
    Bryzgalov: Waivers
    Halak: Eller, Cole
    Ellis: S. Kostysyn

I doubt very highly anyone pays a “toskala price” for Schneider. The truth of the matter is that he is a good, young goalie, but it also helps to play behind one of the best teams in the league and there is always a question mark when a #2 becomes a full-time #1.

And, if Vancouver is bounced this year in the playoffs, then maybe they shop Luongo.. (?)
You would get more for him.

  6. Can’t see Burke wanting to go beyond 3 yrs with Grabovski after only giving Connelly 2yrs. Maybe the CBA will play into his thinking.

  7. Nikk

Cole was a UFA signing, not part of the Halak Trade.

Kostitsyn went to Nashville for almost nothing from MTL, not in a trade for Ellis.

  8. I could see the oilers making an offer sheet for schneider. how much cap space do the nucks have year? he isn’t getting any younger, so why would he want to resign a deal in Van when he knows that greasy old lou still has..what another 9 years left on his deal. these guys want to play, not ride the pine. i can see him holding out a little to spark a trade, not like Turris. but it all depends on what Van can accomplish this post season.
if they crumble…all likelihood they do….maybe bobby lou heads back south…i hear tampa is looking for a goalie.

  9. I really feel Howson was approached by Vancouver at the deadline and Mike Gillis said LISTEN……………….. I want Nash but I want to wait until the draft to get him and I will be willing to give you Cory Schnieder but I want to retain him for my Cup Run this year….Gillis would say if you arent happy with any of the offers and you are in no way in need to move Nash please wait until seasons end and we will exchange Schnieder for Nash in a deal …..this will also explain why Howson called out Nash about him asking for a trade …becuase now it makes things so uncomfortable for Nash to return ….that his list will HAVE get a little longer and will have to include Vancouver if he really wants to be moved or Hoewson can say …”we aint moving you “…Iam in control now…….and thats why Nash was not moved at the deadline……

On that note if Burke declined to aquire Nash and it would have only cost him Schenn Colborne and Gardner ….he should be fired !!!!!
He should be fired anyways…..as with Wilson……..The Leafs at the deadline were 2 points out and on a vicious slide which exposed exactley what they needed to make a serious push……

    TOUGHNESS ……..Steve Ott ….available ……NOT AQUIRED !!!!!!
GOALTENDING …..MULTIPLE GOALIES TO CHOOSE FROM IN A RIGHT DEAL ………NOT AQUIRED !!!!
    POWER FORWARD FRANCHISE PLAYER ….i.e.NASH ….available ……NOT AQUIRED !!!!!

A coaching change after loosing to Washington in a must win game ……NO CHANGE !!!!!!!

Everyone here says you cant empty the cupboards…HAAAAAAAAAAA ….they are already EMPTY!!!!!!!!!

The funny thing is now Burke has no choice but to trade those exact players to get what he needs anyways in the offseason……but gave up a chance at the playoffs ….and losses both ways ………

UN FRICKEN BELIEVABLE ……….he has lost his way ……….and put this team back 3 years with his unmoveable UFA siginings that does not allow hime to move in the pieces needed to have a good young team.

BURKE COMMENT …..We play to make the playoffs that is our goal !!!!!!!!

Ok then Burke …….when you were 2 points out on Feb 27 ….WHY DIDNT YOU DO ANYTHING???????

Oh by the way ……I also said ..if we retain Schenn and Kessel and they fail miserably that there stock would fall …..well gues what …Burke will NEVER EVER get a first rounder EVER again for LUKE SCHENN ….he will be lucky to throw him in on a deal as a throw in to sweeten the deal ……LOST ASSET ….I told you all whjo said …NO way to empty the cupboards……NOW WHAT …..send in the saviour KADRI ….LMFAO

  10. P.S.

Grabovski has not scored in the last 14 games in the most important time of the year and in the most important time in the last 8 years of the Leafs history ….and he wants 5 million a year……… for what ??????
Burke should have got the 1 sy rounder offered for him and then tried to resign him in the off season and if he coudnt …..OH WELL ….thansk for coming out ….replace hi with Joe Colborne at 1 million and save the money to sign Getzlaf or Parise or a Goalie which we need ……Grabovski can be replaced as half the team should be …..I cant believe how many people over value guys …..dont get me wrong Iam a die hard Leafs fan …but real honet decisions need to be made here ……..OH BY THE WAY …..if we continue this slide …that first rounder for Grabovski could have been a TOP 10 pick in one of the deepest drafts on record …..again…….. FIRED

  11. Leaf fan ANGRY!

    Leaf fan BASH!

When teams go on losing streaks, the reason those streaks continue is because of hard criticism and negative atmospheres in the dressing room that add to the contagion like a flu.

Wilson wasn’t that bad this year, but when a team has a massive losing streak like that, he’s gotta learn to say the right words and do the right things. The way he handled it was unacceptable.

  12. Hello Chris,

Wow Chris, coffee kickin’ in. Anyway, I don’t think the Canucks will be getting Rick Nash. Don’t know how they would fit it all in under the cap unless they were trading Lou… or they would have to do a major overhaul of the team. Nash is awesome. The way the team is built, others have taken less to stay to build a winner/contender and Nash’s salary would essentially be an affront to the Sedins, Kesler and anyone else who has taken less to stay.
Just think about what you are talking about in terms of salary for Grabovski who wants 5mil, that is Kesler’s salary…. recent selke…. I think Gillis may regret Lou’s long contract and limited ntc. Lou is a good/great tender, but those types of contracts limit the teams options. But it isn’t the same as Gomez’s salary, but restrictive none the less.

  13. @ Matt G

You are right. I thought the other guys was Ian Cole, but it was Ian Schultz. Never for once did I think it was Eric Cole…

2010/06/29 Montreal Canadiens traded Sergei Kostitsyn and future considerations to the Nashville Predators for Dustin Boyd, Dan Ellis and future considerations.

  14. I am a business owner …obviously not for a Hockey team ..BUT….this is miss managment of the Franchise ….thtas what is upsetting ….2 points out on Feb 27th and now after this saturday could be 28th in the in the League ….thats disgusting ……Burke had aquired the tradeable assets to really improve this team in one fail swoop on the 27th ….even if he had to over play slightly by giving up some youth to get quality players with character and determination but most of all REAL talent !!!!!!

  15. Chris, trading away young defensive rearguards who have yet to live up to their billing and prospects and picks for a “Franchise Player” can really backfire on you badly….

May I cite the following example:

2001/06/23 Ottawa Senators traded Alexei Yashin to the New York Islanders for Zdeno Chara, Bill Muckalt and 1st round selection (Jason Spezza) in 2001.

I’m not saying Schenn is as good as Chara, but I’m also not saing Nash is as good as Yashin.

  16. “Scott Howsen has a history of trading away top picks in the current draft… so who knows.”

In four drafts, Howson has traded his top choice twice – but only once (2011) did he trade it away and not also have a first round pick. The other trades were draft day trades for positioning with other teams.

I don’t know that I could make such a declarative statement over Scott Howson and his proclivity to trade his top picks.

  17. “Veilleux is literally a dime-a-dozen player in the NHL. With Granlund and Coyle in the system, I think the Wild would rather see what they have to offer at the big league level rather than spending time on Veilleux.”

Vellieux is a dime-a-dozen, but Coyle and Granlund are hardly the same type or quality of player. They are top prospects and will have no impact over whether Vellieux makes the Wild roster or not. Vellieux is fighting with Ortmeyer and the like for his roster spot.

  18. “And, if Vancouver is bounced this year in the playoffs, then maybe they shop Luongo.. (?)
You would get more for him.”

With that contract and a no trade clause? Hard to see that Luongo would attract more than a cheaper younger version who may end up being as good.

  19. Hey Chris
I feel your fustration. I personally think the time to fire Wilson was back in early December when the team was on a skid and Wilson was in his 4th season. I know this is a young team but I think that’s the reason Wilson hasn’t had success. We needed a coach that can mentor young players not sit them in the press box when they screw up. Schenn finished last season partnered with Gunnarsson and were considered the Leafs shut down pair averaging over 25 min per game. This season Schenn is considered dog s%$#. What happened in 5 months? Yes his foot speed looked slower at the start of this season but I truely think it comes down to confidence and mentoring from the coach. Now on the other side of the coin Wilson is giving the rookie Gardiner 26+ min per game lately and he is starting to show major cracks in his defensive game because he is to young to log these kinds of minutes against the top players. I really think Wilson just throws these guys out to the wolves and if they do well great and if they don’t well it’s the press box for them. The Leafs need the right coach to take this young team to the next level with the guys that were supposed to do it from the start. Connelly should be on the top line and it he doesn’t cut it dump him in the minors like Burke did with Finger. Send a message to the other players. You sign here for big money you better play up to your potential. Connelly sitting on the third line getting his $5M without any responsbility to earn his salary irk’s me to no end. Burke needs to put his money where his mouth is and start insisting his UFA signings get demoted if they aren’t putting forward 100% effort. He also needs to admit when he’s made a mistake ie keeping Wilson this long.

  20. I can’t see Nash coming to Vancouver. His salary is too much, especially when guys like the Sedin’s, Kesler, Burrows, Bieksa all gave home town discounts. Notice a trend? All have been together for 7 years, and grown together. The team is very closeknit. It is important not to disrupt the dressing room, and bringing in Nash’s big salary would do that, IMO.
I’d love to see Schneider stay, but I can’t see it. He’s to good to ride the bench, so I think he’ll be gone before draft day, and I think it will take a top 4 defenseman, or second line forward and a 1st round pick. Plus, I doubt Gillis will trade in the West.

  21. The difference between Luongo and Schneider is that one guy is a proven #1 and elite goalie, the other guy hasn’t proven anything as a #1.

Again, look at what #2 goalies are traded for. Regardless of the contract, you would definatley find takers for Luongo and his abilities.

@FireWilson: Agree with you about Connolly in theory, but if you bury him in the minors, and do that with other guys like Komisarek, it is going to make it very hard to attract any free agents at all. Finger is a different story because he was an AHLer to begin with, basically.

  22. NikK
I agree with you and thought about that same thing. The more I thought about Burkes record with UFA’s the more I thought this would be the perfect situation. He wouldn’t be able to sign any more UFA’s and we would be golden…

  23. @ Greg:

To my recollection, the only GM since the lockout to trade away a top-10 pick was Howson (in the Carter deal) when the pick/draft position was already known- #7 overall.

But back to my orignal point, he is going to have a lottery pick (likely #1 or #2) so there is no way he trades it for Cory Schneider.

  24. Sometimes I wonder if Burke even goes to see these UFA’s play before deciding to sign them.
Connelly on track for this year: 13 goals 37 points minus 3, last year with Buffalo 13 goals and 41 points minus 10.
So where exactly is the problem since he is on track for exactly what he did last year? The problem stems from Burke paying him $5M to duplicate his numbers from last year while trying to pass him off as a top line center to the media and fans.

  25. To bad the trade deadline isn’t this coming Monday instead of last Monday. Some team would be picking up Van Riemsdyk on the cheap now that he’s out for 6 weeks. He will be tough to replace if he’s not availble in the playoffs.

  26. @ Chris
How would the pick the leafs could’ve obtained for Grabo been better if the Leafs continue to slide? Doesn’t make any sense…we dont know which team offered that pick?

  27. @THewes

I was more so referring to the fact that the Oilers will strike a deal with the Canucks in order to trade for Schnider. Should that not work They should put in an offer sheet for sure. The Oilers are at a point where they don’t really need a whole bucket of young prospects, they have that. They just need a couple of key pieces and time for them to develop fully. They will eventually be a force for many years to come if they can get a solid goalie.

  28. Wow Wilson was just fired! Looks like FireWilson might have to change his name.

  29. Burke should stay the course and not trade young up and coming players for name players simply because Leafs fans are demanding it. The Leafs finally have some decent young players in their system in Schenn, Gardiner, Colborne, Kadri, Frattin, D’Amigo and now Carter Ashton. It makes more sense to try to develop the young guys and have them playing for the Leafs than trade them in hopes of a quick fix, believing by some miracle that Rick Nash or Steve Ott would be your saviour. Burke not trading makes more sense than listening to the fan base…and I am not a Leafs fan.

  30. @Chris

Burke had to over pay for Connelly because lets be honest… there isnt any FA that wants to sign in Canada unless you over pay them.

  31. As I said ………

    P.S.

Grabovski has not scored in the last 14 games in the most important time of the year and in the most important time in the last 8 years of the Leafs history ….and he wants 5 million a year……… for what ??????

  32. I wanted to grab the name first

  33. First of all, learn something about the CBA. Schneider is a RFA so all the Canucks need to do is qualify him (10% raise) and then file for arbitration. GUESS WHAT THAT MEANS???????? It means no team can sign him to an offer sheet!!!!!! Again, a little homework can be your friend.
