Reviewing Brian Burke’s four years as Maple Leafs GM, a please for Canadiens owner David Molson to step up and help end the NHL lockout, and the latest on Kevin Bieksa and Jared Cowen.
TORONTO STAR: Damien Cox reviews the good, the bad and the ugly of Brian Burke’s four years as general manager of the Maple Leafs.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Cox provides a balanced take on Burke’s tenure thus far. While he’s made some positive moves, the club’s inability to make the playoffs clouds his management successes, and his blustering battles with the media haven’t helped. With the Leafs now under new ownership, it’ll be interesting to see how things fare for Burke whenever the league starts up again.
FACEOFF.COM: Montreal Gazette columnist Jack Todd sends an open letter to Montreal Canadiens owner Geoff Molson, begging him to “play the hero” by stepping up as the voice of the moderate NHL owners to bring the lockout to an end.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Good luck with that. Molson doesn’t seem inclined to play the hero for the moderates.
VANCOUVER PROVINCE: Kevin Bieksa believes the Canucks defense corp has the depth and talent to adjust to a shortened NHL season.
OTTAWA CITIZEN: Senators defenseman Jared Cowen is taking it slow in his recovery from a season-ending hip surgery.
