Comparing Sidney Crosby and Wayne Gretzky, the Red Wings re-sign Joakim Andersson, updates on Andrew Shaw, Cal Clutterbuck and Chris Mason, and more.

ESPN.COM: Paul Grant asks, Which player would you rather have in his prime, Wayne Gretzky or Sidney Crosby? Neil Greenberg compares the 2013 NHL draft class to the 2003 class, suggesting the 2013 class has a high bar to clear if they’re to become the best ever.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Though I realize comparing players of different NHL eras is difficult, for me it’s no contest: Gretzky over Crosby. The 2003 NHL draft class was arguably the best in history. It’ll take a few years before we know just how good the 2013 class truly is.

Red Wings ink Joakim Andersson to a 2-year deal.

DETROIT FREE PRESS: The Red Wings yesterday announced the re-signing of forward Joakim Andersson to a two-year, $1.425 million contract, leaving only Gustav Nyquist as their only unsigned restricted free agent.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Wings now have only $312, 121 in available cap space. They’ll have to clear salary before the start of the season. I’ll have more later this morning in my “Rumors” section.

CHICAGO TRIBUNE: Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw will auction off the stitches he received in Game Six of the 2013 Stanley Cup Final, with the proceeds to benefit The Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I’m sure there are fans out there who’ll either be moved by a sense of charity, fun,  or a fanatical desire to own the actual stitches of a real live hockey player who’ll happily bid for them. Regardless, it’s for a good cause, so hopefully Shaw’s stitches rakes in a tidy sum for cancer research.

NEWSDAY: New Islander Cal Clutterbuck met with fans at Nassau Coliseum yesterday for an autograph session.

NBC SPORTS PRO HOCKEY TALK:  Former Nashville Predators goalie Chris Mason will play in Italy this coming season.

TSN: As part of their retrospective of the Gretzky Trade 25 years later, TSN examines how the trade affected the NHL’s economics.
