TRIBLIVE.COM/THE DETROIT NEWS: Sidney Crosby scored twice as the Pittsburgh Penguins downed the Detroit Red Wings 4-1. It was a costly game for both clubs, with Evgeni Malkin sidelined with an apparent leg injury, while Justin Abdelkader was knocked from the game with a concussion after a hit to the head from Penguins defenseman Deryk Engelland, who could face suspension for the hit.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Another game, another player sidelined with a possible concussion from a hit to the head. Remind me again how the players are supposedly “getting the message” from the league’s rules targeting reckless play and dangerous hits.

PIONEER PRESS: Mikko Koivu and Zach Parise scored in the shootout as the Minnesota Wild nipped the Colorado Avalanche 2-1.

THE TENNESSEAN: Viktor Stalberg tallied the game winner as the Nashville Predators collected their third straight victory by downing the San Jose Sharks 3-2.

STLTODAY.COM: David Backes scored in overtime to lift the St. Louis Blues to a 4-3 come-from-behind win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

NORTHJERSEY.COM: Martin Brodeur made 33 saves for the 124th shutout of his career as the New Jersey Devils blanked the Tampa Bay Lightning  3-0.

NEWSOBSERVER.COM: Eric Staal collected three points and Jeff Skinner scored for the third straight game as the Carolina Hurricanes downed the Phoenix Coyotes 3-1.

NOTE: Games involving Canadian NHL teams are recapped in “Canadian Corner”.

BOSTON GLOBE: The NHL has suspended Bruins forward Shawn Thornton 15 games for his attack on Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Brooks Oprik.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: He got what I expected he’d get. There’s talk Thornton could appeal but  I don’t think he’ll succeed in getting the suspension reduced.

SUN-SENTINEL.COM: The Florida Panthers have placed goaltender Tim Thomas (groin injury) on LTIR.

  1. Should have been the season at the min.

Grays Broduer hope you get 125.

  2. Thornton got what he deserved and he’s lost the halo of never having been suspended now. he’s a marked man and will have to play within the lines without Matt Cooke’s offensive skills.his effectiveness is now limited especially since he’s lost a lot of the respect other players once had for him. i suspect Boston will only be loyal to him until he’s outlived his usefulness and if he was smart he’d find a new home in the offseason as a UFA, maybe Pittsburgh, Minnesota or Washington.
